Who can extend a Vietnam visa
You need a sponsor in Vietnam — a company, or a relative for family visas. The maximum extension depends on your visa symbol:

Documents
- Original passport, valid at least 30 days beyond the requested extension
- Form NA5 signed by the sponsor (new template under Circular 70/2026/TT-BCA, effective 1 July 2026)
- Company file: business registration certificate and form NA16 (registered seal and signature specimen)
- Family file: marriage or birth certificate proving the relationship
- Temporary residence declaration (form NA17) for the address where you stay

If your visa already expired
Overstaying is fined under Decree 282/2025/ND-CP from 0.5–2 million VND (under 16 days) up to 30–40 million VND (1 year or more), and repeated overstays can affect future entries. Apply at least 10 days before expiry, or ask us about a same-day visa run if an extension is not possible.
Extension or temporary residence card?
If you plan to stay more than a year, a temporary residence card is cheaper per year and replaces the visa on entry. Extensions make sense for stays under 12 months or while a work permit is pending.

Visa extension in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang
A Vietnam visa extension is always filed by your sponsor, not by you alone. Under the immigration law, the sponsoring company, organisation or individual submits the request and passport to the immigration authority, which decides within 5 working days of receiving a complete file; in practice, allow about 5–7 working days. Which office handles your file depends on who sponsors you and where the sponsor is registered:
- Immigration Department (national level): has offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang and handles company-sponsored cases, especially companies with branches in several provinces. See the Vietnam Immigration Department guide.
- Provincial or city police immigration offices: handle extensions for foreigners sponsored by organisations and individuals in their area, such as a Vietnamese spouse or a locally registered company. See the list of provincial immigration offices.
Visa extension in Ho Chi Minh City
For a Vietnam visa extension in Ho Chi Minh City, company-sponsored files are often filed at the Immigration Department office in the city, while family and locally sponsored files usually go to the Ho Chi Minh City Police immigration office. Since 1 July 2025, Binh Duong and Ba Ria – Vung Tau are part of Ho Chi Minh City, so sponsors registered there now file with the city authorities. Submit at least 10 days before your permitted stay ends.
Visa extension in Hanoi
For a visa extension in Hanoi, northern companies typically file at the Immigration Department office in Hanoi, while personal sponsors and companies operating only in Hanoi often find the Hanoi Police immigration office faster. Offices work Monday to Friday during office hours, so public holidays add to the waiting time.
Visa extension in Da Nang
For a visa extension in Da Nang, the Immigration Department office in Da Nang serves central Vietnam and the Central Highlands; since 1 July 2025 Quang Nam (including Hoi An) is part of Da Nang. Simpler, locally sponsored files can be filed with the Da Nang Police immigration office.
Notes for tourists
- A tourist e-visa or visa-free stay can only be extended in Vietnam if an eligible organisation or individual sponsors you. Without a sponsor, the usual route is a short trip abroad (visa run) and a new Vietnam e-visa. Staying longer than a year? Compare extension or residence card.

Visa extension FAQ
Can a tourist visa be extended?
Yes, if an eligible company, organisation or individual sponsors you. A tourist (DL) visa is usually extended for up to 3 months at a time. Without a sponsor you will normally need a new e-visa and to leave Vietnam first.
Can I extend my visa online?
You cannot apply in your own name: the sponsor files the application. A company with an electronic account on the immigration portal can file online where the procedure is offered online, but the original passport is usually still needed for the visa stamp. Which form is the visa extension application?
Form NA5 (request for a visa or extension of temporary residence). From 1 July 2026 only the Circular 70/2026/TT-BCA template is accepted, signed and stamped by the sponsor. See how to fill in form NA5.
Can a visa-exempt stay be extended?
Not in the way a visa is extended. Under the 2023 amendments, a person who entered under unilateral visa exemption and needs to stay longer may be considered for a visa or a temporary residence extension if a company, organisation or individual sponsors them; otherwise they must leave before the stay ends.
