Exchange a Foreign Driving Licence for a Vietnamese One

A foreign driving licence is not automatically valid for driving in Vietnam. Foreigners residing here can apply to exchange their national licence for a Vietnamese one without taking a driving test, provided their stay is long enough and the licence is still valid.

Requirements

• Valid foreign driving licence
• Passport with a valid visa or residence card, with remaining stay generally of at least three months
• Notarised Vietnamese translation of the licence
• Application form and photos

When an exchange is not possible

• The licence has expired
• The licence category does not exist in the Vietnamese system
• The remaining stay is too short

In those cases the applicant takes the Vietnamese test instead. International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention are recognised for temporary visitors, but not as a basis for a permanent Vietnamese licence.

Timing

Usually 5–7 working days after submission. We prepare the translation, the form and file the application; the applicant attends only if the receiving office requires a signature or photo on site.
