Residence Card Renewal Process and Timeline in Vietnam
This page covers the renewal steps and timing. To have us handle the file, see the residence card service.
Five stages
- 45 days before expiry — check the work permit or capital documents; renew those first if they expire sooner than the card you want.
- 30 days before — prepare forms NA6/NA7 and NA8 on the current templates, obtain signature and seal.
- File — with the Immigration Department or the provincial immigration office where the sponsor is registered (see post-merger filing).
- 6–15 working days — review; the office may request supplementation or fingerprints.
- Collection — pay the government fee (145 USD under 2 years, 155 USD for 2 to under 5 years, 165 USD for 5 to 10 years) and collect the card with the passport.
Avoiding a gap in status
- Do not travel out of Vietnam while the passport is with the immigration office.
- If the card will expire during processing, ask about an interim temporary residence stamp when filing.
- Keep the temporary residence declaration current — a move during processing invalidates the address in the file.
