Vietnam Visa for Canadian Citizens 2026: E-Visa & Rules

Vietnam visa for Canadian citizens in 2026: Canada is not on Vietnam’s visa exemption list, so Canadians need a visa before they fly. Most visitors use the e-visa, which is valid for up to 90 days with a single entry (USD 25) or multiple entries (USD 50). The exception is a direct arrival at Phu Quoc, where you can stay up to 30 days on the island only. Canadians of Vietnamese origin can apply for a 5-year visa exemption certificate. Do Canadians need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Vietnam’s unilateral visa exemptions under Resolutions 44/NQ-CP and 229/NQ-CP of 2025 cover a set group of European and Asian countries, and Canada is not one of them. The Vietnam visa exemption list also has no bilateral exemption for ordinary Canadian passports. Without a visa, the airline will normally refuse to board you for the mainland. Your options:

Vietnam e-visa for Canadians: how to apply

Since August 2023 the e-visa is open to every nationality, and since the 2023 law amendment it can be valid for up to 90 days. You apply yourself on the official portal evisa.gov.vn, or use our Vietnam e-visa service if you want the file checked before submission.

  1. Check that your Canadian passport is valid for at least six months from entry and has two blank pages.
  2. Prepare a recent portrait photo (straight face, plain light background, no glasses) and a clear scan of the passport bio page with the full MRZ lines.
  3. Fill in the form exactly as your passport reads, including middle names, plus your first address in Vietnam.
  4. Choose the entry gate you will actually use and an exit gate. You can only enter through gates listed for e-visa holders; there are currently 83 airports, land border gates and seaports under Resolutions 127/NQ-CP and 389/NQ-CP.
  5. Pay the state fee online and keep your registration code.
  6. Processing usually takes 3–5 working days. Print the approved e-visa and check every detail.

The step-by-step e-visa application guide shows each screen. Plan ahead of Tết and the Canadian winter holidays, when demand peaks.

Phu Quoc, visa on arrival and urgent visas

Travellers arriving at Phu Quoc from abroad may stay up to 30 days without a visa, but only on the island; going on to the mainland requires a visa. Visa on arrival is not a walk-up service: you need an approval letter issued before departure, and the visa is stamped at an international airport. If your trip is only days away, an urgent Vietnam visa can be arranged.

Working, investing or living long-term

  • Work: teaching English or any paid job is work. You need a work permit (or exemption confirmation) under Decree 219/2025/ND-CP, an LĐ visa and, for longer stays, a temporary residence card. Degrees and criminal record checks from Canada must be legalised and translated. See our work permit service.
  • Family: spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens use a TT visa followed by a residence card.
  • Business: a DN visa needs a Vietnamese company to sponsor you.
  • Investors: ĐT visas and residence cards depend on the capital invested.

Vietnam has no retirement or digital-nomad visa, so a long stay must match a real purpose. Note that the 5-year exemption certificate does not allow employment.

Extensions and overstay

An e-visa cannot be extended at will; an in-country extension or new visa needs a qualified sponsor, and each extension carries a USD 10 state fee. Overstaying is fined under Article 21 of Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, starting at VND 0.5–2 million for under 16 days and rising with length. If you are already past your date, read Vietnam visa overstay fines and contact us before going to the airport.

Embassy of Canada in Vietnam

Canada is represented by the Embassy of Canada in Hanoi and the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City. They help with lost passports, emergencies and notarial services for Canadians; they do not issue Vietnamese visas. Visa stickers on an approval letter are collected at the Embassy of Vietnam in Ottawa or another designated Vietnamese mission, or at the airport if the letter allows it.

FAQ

Can Canadians get a Vietnam visa on arrival without any paperwork?

No. Visa on arrival requires an approval letter issued before you fly. For most tourists the e-visa is simpler.

I hold both Vietnamese and Canadian citizenship. Which passport should I use?

With a valid Vietnamese passport you enter without a visa. On your Canadian passport you need an e-visa, a visa or a 5-year exemption certificate.

Can I extend my 90-day e-visa?

Only with a qualified sponsor such as an employer or a Vietnamese family member. Otherwise you must leave before it expires and apply again.

Is the Vietnam visa for Canadian citizens different from other nationalities?

No special rules apply: the same e-visa, fees and entry gates apply to Canadians as to other visitors who are not visa-exempt.
