Foreigners applying for a work permit in Vietnam must submit a health certificate that is valid for 12 months. Health certificates issued abroad are now almost never accepted, so you need to have your check-up at a hospital in Vietnam that is authorized to examine foreigners. This article lists the hospitals most commonly used in Hà Nội, TP. Hồ Chí Minh, Đà Nẵng and other provinces, together with how to prepare and the typical cost.
What does a health certificate for a work permit need to meet?
- Issued in Vietnam: under Decree 219/2025/ND-CP, a health certificate issued abroad is only accepted if Vietnam and that country have a treaty or agreement on mutual recognition. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, no such agreement exists yet, so a foreign health certificate cannot be used even if it has been consular legalized.
- Valid for 12 months from the date the doctor signs the conclusion, counted up to the day the work permit application is submitted.
- Correct form: a bilingual Vietnamese – English certificate with a photo, a page-seam stamp, and the signature and stamp of the concluding doctor and of the medical facility.
- No legalization needed: a certificate issued by a hospital in Vietnam is used directly, without legalization or notarized translation.

What to prepare for the check-up
- Original passport.
- 2–3 photos, 4×6 cm, white background (many hospitals take them on site).
- Skip breakfast if your check-up is in the morning so the blood test is accurate.
- Tell the hospital clearly that the check-up is for a work permit and that you need a bilingual certificate.
Typical cost: about VND 1,200,000 – 2,500,000 per person; public hospitals are usually cheaper than private and international ones. Results are usually ready the same day or within a few working days, depending on the hospital.

Frequently asked questions
Can a health certificate issued abroad be used for a work permit?
Currently, almost never. Decree 219/2025/ND-CP only accepts foreign health certificates when there is a mutual recognition agreement between Vietnam and the issuing country, and no such agreement exists yet. So you should have your check-up in Vietnam.
How long is the health certificate valid?
12 months from the date the doctor signs the conclusion. The work permit application must be submitted while the certificate is still valid.
Does the health certificate need consular legalization?
No. A certificate issued by a hospital in Vietnam is used directly. Only university degrees, experience letters and criminal record certificates issued abroad need consular legalization and notarized translation.
