Renewing a Five-Year Visa Exemption Certificate
The certificate lasts up to five years, and never beyond the passport it is stamped in. Two events trigger a new filing: expiry and a new passport.
Documents
- Form NA9 on the current template
- The expiring certificate, or the old and new passports in a passport-change case
- Original proof of Vietnamese origin or of the family relationship — the authority may ask to see it again
- Photos to the standard requirements
Timing
About 5–7 working days. Start roughly a month before expiry if you have travel booked; the passport stays with the authority during processing.
Differences from a first application
| First application | Renewal | |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of origin | Full evidence chain | Usually lighter, previous certificate as reference |
| Fee | 20 USD | 20 USD |
| Processing | 5–7 working days | 5–7 working days |
Worth checking before renewing
If the holder now lives in Vietnam most of the year, a TT residence card may fit better: three years of continuous residence rather than 180-day blocks.
Procedure for a first certificate: step by step.
