Five-Year Visa Exemption Certificate: Step-by-Step Procedure
This page is the procedure. Eligibility and limits are on the service page.
Step 1 — Establish the ground
Either you are of Vietnamese origin, or you are the foreign spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen or of a person of Vietnamese origin. Everything else follows from proving this.
Step 2 — Gather proof
- Old Vietnamese passport, ID card or household registration
- Birth certificate issued in Vietnam, or parents documents showing descent
- Certificate of Vietnamese origin issued by a Vietnamese representative mission
- Marriage or birth certificate for family applicants — legalised and translated if foreign
Step 3 — Complete form NA9
The 2026 template applies from 1 July 2026 — see the new forms. Photos must meet the standard portrait requirements.
Step 4 — File
At a Vietnamese embassy or consulate abroad, or with the Immigration Department inside Vietnam. Government fee 20 USD; processing about 5–7 working days once the origin documents are complete.
Step 5 — Use and maintain it
- Each entry allows up to 180 days of stay.
- The certificate is stamped into the passport — when the passport is replaced, the certificate must be transferred.
- It does not permit employment; that needs a work permit.
Service from 3,200,000 VND. Renewal: renewing the certificate.
