Main consular services

The Embassy of Vietnam in Sri Lanka provides consular services to two main groups:

  • Vietnamese citizens: issuing, renewing and replacing passports; civil status registration (births, marriages, deaths and recording events registered locally); nationality procedures; certification, legalisation and attestation of documents; citizen protection in case of accidents, lost documents or detention.
  • Foreign nationals: Vietnamese visas and legalisation of documents for use in Vietnam. Today most tourists and short-term business travellers apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn without visiting the mission; visas stamped at the mission are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants who already hold an entry approval letter.

If you apply remotely (for example from the Maldives), ask in advance how to submit, how results are returned and how long processing takes, as the process may differ from applying in person in Colombo.

Do Sri Lankan citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Sri Lanka is not on the Vietnam visa exemption list, so Sri Lankan citizens need a visa. The most common option is an e-visa at evisa.gov.vn, valid for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry (government fee USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry). Our e-visa application guide explains each step. Business travellers invited by a Vietnamese company can also use an approval letter to obtain a visa.

Legalising Sri Lankan documents for use in Vietnam

Vietnam has joined the Apostille Convention (in force since 11 September 2026), but the Hague Conference status table does not currently list Sri Lanka as a party. Sri Lankan documents (degrees, police clearance for work permits, marriage certificates, etc.) therefore generally still need consular legalisation: authentication by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalisation at the Vietnamese embassy in Colombo, followed by a notarised Vietnamese translation when filed in Vietnam. Check the exact requirements with the receiving authority in Vietnam first.

Info Travel handles the Vietnam side through our consular legalisation service and work permit service.

FAQ

What are the embassy’s opening hours in Colombo?

The Ministry’s list does not state opening hours. Please check the official website or call +94 11 269 6050 before visiting.

Do I need an appointment?

It is best to call ahead to confirm the documents needed and reception times, especially if you travel from far away or from the Maldives.

Should I apply at the embassy or for an e-visa?

For tourism and short business trips an online e-visa is usually faster and easier. Embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports or for holders of an approval letter.
