Main consular services
For Vietnamese citizens living, studying or working in Japan, the mission typically handles:
- Passports, and travel documents after a passport is lost.
- Civil status: births, marriages, deaths.
- Vietnamese nationality procedures.
- Consular legalisation; attestation of signatures and copies.
- Citizen protection in emergencies.
For foreigners, most travellers now apply for an e-visa at evisa.gov.vn; embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for holders of an approval letter naming the embassy as pick-up point.
Do Japanese citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Japanese citizens enjoy a unilateral visa exemption of up to 45 days per entry, regardless of passport type or purpose of entry (Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028). For longer stays, work or multiple entries, apply for an e-visa of up to 90 days on the official portal evisa.gov.vn or for a visa based on an approval letter. See our guide Vietnam visa for Japanese citizens.
Legalising documents from Japan for use in Vietnam
From 11 September 2026, documents issued in Japan (degrees, criminal record certificates, marriage or birth certificates) for use in Vietnam can be certified with an apostille instead of consular legalisation, as Japan is a party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession (Decree 293/2026/ND-CP). The usual route:
- Obtain an apostille from the competent authority in Japan under local rules.
- Confirm with the receiving authority in Vietnam first; documents outside the Convention can still be legalised at the Vietnamese Embassy or a Consulate-General in Japan.
- Translate it into Vietnamese and have the translation certified.
Some documents may be exempt under bilateral treaties. Apostilled or legalised documents are essential for a Vietnam work permit (degree, criminal record) and for marriage files. Info Travel offers consular legalisation and notarised translation in Vietnam.

FAQ
What are the opening hours of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan?
The MOFA portal does not publish hours; check the official website or call before visiting.
Do I need an appointment?
Some procedures require advance registration; check the official website’s notices.
Should foreigners apply at the embassy or online?
For tourism and short business trips, the e-visa is faster. An embassy visa suits travellers whose approval letter names the embassy for pick-up.
