Main consular services

For Vietnamese citizens living, studying or working in China, the missions typically handle:

  • Passports and emergency travel documents.
  • Birth, marriage and death registration.
  • Nationality matters.
  • Consular legalisation and attestation.
  • Citizen protection in emergencies.

For foreigners, the missions issue visas for Vietnam. In practice most travellers now apply for an e-visa online on the official portal evisa.gov.vn without visiting an embassy. Visas stamped at a mission are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants who already hold an approval letter from the Vietnam Immigration Department.

Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Chinese citizens with ordinary passports are not on Vietnam’s visa exemption list, so they need a visa. The simplest option is an e-visa (up to 90 days; USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry), applied for on the official portal evisa.gov.vn. See our guide to the Vietnam visa for Chinese citizens and the general Vietnam e-visa page, which explains which ports of entry accept e-visas.

Legalising documents from China for use in Vietnam

From 11 September 2026, documents issued in China for use in Vietnam can be certified with an apostille instead of consular legalisation (China is a party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession). For example:

  • Degrees and experience letters for a work permit.
  • Criminal record certificates.
  • Birth, single-status and marriage certificates.

The usual route: the document is apostilled by the competent authority in China; once in Vietnam it is translated into Vietnamese and notarised. Confirm with the receiving authority first; outside the Convention, consular legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy or a consulate-general there remains available. Info Travel offers consular legalisation, notarised translation and complete work permit files in Vietnam.

FAQ

What are the opening hours of the Vietnamese Embassy in China?

The Ministry’s list does not state opening hours; check the official website in the table.

Do I need an appointment?

It depends on the mission and the procedure. The safest approach is to call or email first to confirm the required documents and when to submit them.

Should I apply for a visa at the embassy or get an e-visa?

For tourism, short business trips or family visits, an e-visa is the quickest and simplest option because everything is done online. Go to the mission only if you hold a diplomatic or official passport, or your approval letter names that mission as the visa pick-up point.
