Consular services for Brazilian citizens

We could not read the service list on the embassy’s page, so the items below are simply the areas a Brazilian embassy’s consular sector typically deals with; confirm the exact scope directly:

  • passport matters and emergency travel documents;
  • registration of births and marriages of Brazilians abroad (registro civil);
  • signature recognition, powers of attorney (procuração) and document legalisation;
  • help for citizens in distress, detained or hospitalised;
  • information on voting for Brazilian voters abroad.

What to know before you go

  • Call or email to book; many Brazilian embassies handle consular matters by appointment.
  • Bring your Brazilian passport or ID, a copy of your Vietnamese visa or residence card, and the original documents concerned.
  • The embassy closes on Vietnamese and Brazilian holidays (for example Carnival and Independence Day, 7 September).
  • The address has changed: many directories still say 14 Thuy Khue, but Google Maps and recent visitors place the embassy on the 4th floor of the HCO Building, 44B Ly Thuong Kiet; call to confirm and go straight up to the 4th floor.
  • People who have dealt with the embassy recommend emailing first: replies tend to come fairly quickly and spell out what to prepare.
  • Staff speak English; visitors mention some documents being ready within about 2–3 working days when the file is complete – treat that as a rough guide and ask for the actual timeframe when you apply.
  • The reception desk is not always the friendliest experience; arriving with originals, copies and your questions written down keeps the visit short.

What foreigners usually need when they contact the Brazilian Embassy

Most Brazilian nationals get in touch with their mission for one of the reasons below. Each one usually has a matching step on the Vietnamese side, handled by the Immigration Department.

  • Lost or stolen passport: report it to the local ward police and get a confirmation, then ask the mission for an emergency travel document or a new passport. Because your Vietnamese visa was in the old passport, you also need a new visa or an exit visa from Vietnam Immigration before you can leave – see exit procedures.
  • Passport about to expire: renew it, then transfer your visa or temporary residence card to the new passport; combine this with a visa extension if your stay is running out.
  • Marriage, birth registration, work permit: you will need certificates of marital status, criminal record checks or diplomas issued in Brazil, legalised and translated.
  • Signature notarisation and powers of attorney for property, bank or family matters.
  • Citizen registration and overseas voting, so the mission can reach you in an emergency.

Help with Brazilian passports in Vietnam

We have not been able to verify whether the Brazilian Embassy in Hanoi accepts regular passport applications, or how long they take. Ask the embassy directly. If it cannot be done in Vietnam, alternatives are applying in Brazil or at another Brazilian mission, or – after losing a passport – an emergency return document (Autorização de Retorno ao Brasil).

Info Travel prepares forms, photos and translations and handles the Vietnamese side: transferring your visa or residence card to the new passport, or arranging a new visa or exit visa if the old passport was lost. Biometrics normally require you to attend in person; we only assist within what the embassy allows.

Apostille, consular legalisation, consular certification (Ministry of Foreign Affairs / HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs stamp) and notarised translation

Since 11 September 2026 the Hague Apostille Convention has applied to Vietnam (accession deposited on 31 December 2025). As Brazil is a Convention party and raised no objection to Vietnam’s accession, most public documents between the two countries now need a single apostille instead of several legalisation steps (apostille vs consular legalisation).

a) Documents issued in Brazil for use in Vietnam

Main route: obtain an apostille from the competent authority in Brazil (in Brazil apostilles are issued by notary offices – cartórios) for public documents such as birth and marriage certificates, police certificates or diplomas. An apostilled document no longer needs legalisation by a Vietnamese embassy or by the Consular Department; you only need a Vietnamese notarised translation before submitting it to the Vietnamese authority.

Consular legalisation remains the fallback – for documents outside the Convention (for example documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents, or administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations) or where the receiving office still insists: legalisation at the Vietnamese mission in Brazil, or certification by the Brazilian Embassy (where it handles that document) followed by legalisation at the Consular Department in Hanoi or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, unless exempted under an international treaty.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in Brazil

The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Hanoi) and the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs are Vietnam’s apostille authorities. Vietnamese documents (marriage and birth certificates, degrees, certified powers of attorney…) apostilled there can be used in Brazil without legalisation at the Brazilian Embassy; add a translation into the language the authority in Brazil requires. The old chain – consular certification followed by legalisation at the Brazilian Embassy – is only needed for documents outside the apostille system.

As apostilles are new for Vietnam, some offices may still ask about old-style legalisation – confirm requirements before you submit. Info Travel takes care of translation, notarisation, apostilles or consular certification at the Ministry/Department of Foreign Affairs, and legalisation at the mission when it is still required.
