Consular services for Korean citizens
We could not read the official website, so we do not list every procedure. In principle the Consulate General is the point of contact for Korean citizens in the south for:
- protection of nationals after accidents, lost documents, arrest or the death of a relative;
- identity and family-registration matters – check the website for which passport services are offered in HCMC and whether you need to book;
- certificates and attestations for citizens (see the official list);
- decisions on Korean visas – applications go through KVAC HCMC at 253 Dien Bien Phu, Xuan Hoa Ward.
Before you go
- The waiting room is small with limited seating; peak seasons (before Lunar New Year, holiday periods) mean long waits – arrive early.
- There are no shortcuts: take a ticket and use the official counters, and be wary of people at the gate offering to speed things up.
- Online information is not always fully up to date; call or email first if your case is unusual.
- Security checks ID at the entrance – bring your original passport.
- Closed on Vietnamese holidays and major Korean holidays; check notices online.
Common situations foreigners face
Passport lost in HCMC, Vung Tau or Phu Quoc. Obtain a police report where it happened, contact the Consulate General for a travel document or new passport, then go to the Immigration Office for a new visa/exit permission because your old visa disappeared with the passport – see exit procedures.
Passport expiring while you work here. After renewal, transfer your work visa or reissue your temporary residence card under the new passport. With only a tourist visa or e-visa, check whether a visa extension is possible or whether you must exit.
Marriage and births in Vietnam. Korean–Vietnamese couples in the south need marital-status evidence for the Korean partner, apostilled and translated; children born here need a Vietnamese birth registration and reporting to Korea.
Powers of attorney and signature certification for property and banking in Korea.
Korean passport help in Vietnam
We could not confirm from the official site which passport applications the HCMC Consulate General accepts, so check the website or call first. Where it does, applicants usually attend in person for biometrics; otherwise the options are an emergency travel document or applying where the Korean authorities direct you.
Info Travel helps prepare documents, translations and the process – and, above all, handles the Vietnamese side: transferring your visa/TRC to the new passport, exit visas and a Vietnam e-visa for your next entry. We assist only within what the Korean authorities permit.
Apostille, consular legalisation and notarised translation
The Apostille Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026; Korea is a long-standing party and did not object. In practice:
a) Korean documents for Vietnam (degrees, criminal records, family-relation certificates): apostille in Korea, then a notarised translation. The old legalisation chain via the Vietnamese mission in Korea is now a fallback only, unless a treaty provides an exemption – see apostille vs consular legalisation.
b) Vietnamese documents for Korea: apostille from the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs or the Consular Department in Hanoi, with a Korean translation if required. If a Korean authority still insists on legalisation, consular certification followed by the Korean mission’s legalisation is the fallback.
Info Travel’s office is in central HCMC, close to the Department of Foreign Affairs; we handle translation, notarisation and apostille/certification end to end. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
