Consular services for Swiss citizens

The Swiss foreign ministry (FDFA) states plainly that consular services are provided exclusively by the Consulate General in HCMC; the Swiss Cooperation Office in Hanoi also refers all consular affairs there. So even if you live in Hanoi, Swiss and Liechtenstein citizens deal with HCMC for:

  • passports and ID cards (apply online, then you are invited to record biometrics) and temporary passports;
  • civil status: marriage, birth, death; registering or deregistering as a Swiss abroad;
  • legalisation of signatures and seals, and attestations;
  • Swiss visas for foreign nationals.

For out-of-hours emergencies call the FDFA Helpline (+41 800 24-7-365 or +41 58 465 33 33, helpline@eda.admin.ch) – open 24/7, 365 days a year.

Before you go

  • Do not go to the embassy for passports or legalisation – you will be referred to the Consulate General in HCMC.
  • The office entrance inside the building at 44B Ly Thuong Kiet is a little hard to find; ask building reception and call ahead.
  • Emails to the embassy about consular matters are often answered by the Consulate General – that is normal.
  • For important matters discussed by phone, ask for confirmation by email.
  • Bring your passport to sign into the building; closed on Vietnamese and Swiss holidays (e.g. National Day, 1 August).

Common situations foreigners face

Passport lost in Hanoi or the north. Get a loss report from the ward police, contact the Swiss Consulate General (HCMC) for a temporary passport, then obtain a new visa or complete exit procedures at the Immigration Department in Hanoi, since your visa was lost with the passport.

Passport expiring. Apply online and wait for the biometrics invitation in HCMC. With the new passport, transfer your visa or reissue your temporary residence card; if the visa is also expiring, consider a visa extension.

Marriage and births in Vietnam. Swiss civil-status documents need an apostille and notarised Vietnamese translation; events in Vietnam are recorded in Switzerland via the Consulate General.

Work permits: Swiss criminal record extracts (Strafregisterauszug) and degrees need an apostille and translation.

Swiss passport help in Vietnam

The Hanoi embassy does not accept passport applications. Citizens apply online and attend the Consulate General in HCMC for biometrics; a temporary passport is available for urgent travel. Info Travel helps Swiss residents of the north prepare documents and translations and plan the trip to HCMC, and afterwards transfers visas/TRCs or arranges exit procedures – within what the Swiss authorities permit.

Apostille, consular legalisation and notarised translation

Switzerland has been party to the Apostille Convention since 1973 and did not object to Vietnam; the Convention has applied between the two since 11 September 2026.

a) Swiss documents for Vietnam: apostille from the competent Swiss authority (usually the cantonal chancellery – Staatskanzlei – or the Federal Chancellery for federal documents), then a notarised translation. Legalisation via the Vietnamese Embassy in Bern is now a fallback, unless a treaty exempts the document – see apostille vs consular legalisation.

b) Vietnamese documents for Switzerland: apostille from the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) – closest for northern residents – or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs; translate into German, French, Italian or English as required. The FDFA checks each request for an applicable apostille arrangement; legalisation at the Consulate General is used only where needed.

Info Travel handles translation, notarisation and apostille at the Consular Department in Hanoi end to end. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
