Consular services for Swiss citizens

According to the FDFA pages for Vietnam, the Consulate General is the sole consular office for the whole country:

  • Swiss passports and ID cards: apply online; once reviewed you receive an invitation to record biometrics; temporary passports for urgent travel.
  • Civil status: marriage, birth, death, partnerships; forwarding Vietnamese civil-status events for recording in Switzerland.
  • Registration and deregistration of Swiss abroad; the online desk.
  • Legalisation of private signatures and of Vietnamese authorities’ seals and signatures; attestations.
  • Emergency consular assistance and Swiss visas.

Before you go

  • To reach the office in Bitexco you must leave an ID document at the lobby – bring a second ID besides the passport you need for your procedure.
  • Bitexco is a tourist landmark (Skydeck) and the lobby is busy; use the office-tower entrance, not the observation-deck entrance.
  • Friday is mornings only. Contact the office first, and for passports come only once you have your invitation.
  • Building parking is paid; a taxi to the Hai Trieu entrance is easiest.
  • Closed on Vietnamese and Swiss holidays (1 August National Day, Christmas, etc.).

Common situations foreigners face

Lost passport. Report it to the police, then contact the Consulate General for a temporary passport. Next, get a new visa or exit permission from the Immigration Office because your Vietnamese visa was in the old passport – see exit procedures. Info Travel’s office is a few minutes’ walk from Bitexco and can help straight away.

Passport expiring. Apply online early, as you must wait for the invitation. With the new passport, transfer your visa or reissue your temporary residence card; if the visa is running out, arrange a visa extension first.

Marrying a Vietnamese citizen. Swiss certificates of capacity to marry and civil-status documents need an apostille and notarised translation; after registration in Vietnam, the Consulate General forwards the file for recording in Switzerland.

Signature legalisation on powers of attorney or contracts used in Switzerland.

Swiss passport help in Vietnam

The Consulate General records biometrics for Swiss passports and ID cards; applicants must attend in person after applying online. Info Travel helps with the form, photos, translations of Vietnamese documents (e.g. a child’s birth certificate) and directions to Bitexco, and afterwards transfers your visa/TRC or arranges exit procedures. We assist only within what the Consulate General permits.

Apostille, consular legalisation and notarised translation

Switzerland is party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession; the Convention has applied to Vietnam since 11 September 2026.

a) Swiss documents for Vietnam: apostille in Switzerland (cantonal chancellery or Federal Chancellery depending on the document), then a notarised translation. Legalisation via the Vietnamese Embassy in Bern remains a fallback, unless a treaty exempts the document – see apostille vs consular legalisation.

b) Vietnamese documents for Switzerland: apostille from the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs or the Consular Department. If needed, the Consulate General can legalise seals and signatures of Vietnamese authorities – the FDFA checks case by case whether an apostille arrangement applies. Add a German/French/Italian/English translation as required.

Info Travel, in central HCMC, handles translation, notarisation, apostille at the Department of Foreign Affairs and drop-off/collection at the Consulate General when needed. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
