Swiss citizens travelling to Vietnam as tourists do not need a visa: Government Resolution 229/NQ-CP exempts them for stays of up to 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type, from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028. The exemption is for tourism only – for business trips, work, family stays or trips longer than 45 days, the Vietnam visa for Swiss citizens is the 90-day e-visa or a sponsored visa, and a temporary residence card for long-term residents. Vietnam visa for Swiss citizens: the 45-day tourist exemption
Resolution 229/NQ-CP of 8 August 2025 grants a visa exemption to citizens of 12 European countries under Vietnam’s tourism stimulus programme: Switzerland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. For Swiss travellers the rule means:
- Length of stay: up to 45 days from the date of entry.
- Passport: any Swiss passport type; in practice it should be valid for at least 6 months on arrival.
- Purpose: tourism (“mục đích du lịch”). This is the main difference from the Resolution 44 countries such as Germany, whose exemption covers any purpose.
- Validity: 15/8/2025 – 14/8/2028. It replaced the earlier Resolution 11/NQ-CP of January 2025, which covered Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic.
- Conditions: you must meet Vietnam’s general entry conditions.
So, to the question often asked in German – “Vietnam Visum für Schweizer?” – the answer is: no visa for a holiday of up to 45 days. Check the latest list on our Vietnam visa exemption countries page before travelling.

When Swiss travellers need an e-visa
Apply for an e-visa if you plan to stay longer than 45 days, need multiple entries, or are travelling for a purpose other than tourism, such as attending meetings or a conference. The e-visa is issued on the official portal evisa.gov.vn:
- Complete the form with your name exactly as in the passport (all given names), passport details, planned dates, address in Vietnam and the port of entry you will use.
- Upload a recent portrait photo (light background, facing forward, no glasses) and a clear scan of the passport data page with readable MRZ lines.
- Pay USD 25 (single entry) or USD 50 (multiple entry) online.
- Check the result with your registration code – usually about 3 working days – and print or save the e-visa.
The passport should be valid for at least 6 months, and the e-visa is used at the international airports and designated land and sea border gates. Our e-visa application guide explains each field.
Business, work and long stays
- Business visits: because the Swiss exemption is for tourism, regular business travellers often use an e-visa or a DN business visa sponsored by a Vietnamese company.
- Employment: a work permit under Decree 219/2025/ND-CP (or an exemption confirmation), an LĐ visa and then a residence card. Swiss diplomas and criminal record extracts must be authenticated as Vietnam requires and translated – see our Vietnam work permit service.
- Investors: an ĐT visa based on the invested capital.
- Family: a TT visa for spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens or of residence card holders.
- Retirees: Vietnam has no separate retirement visa; the right route depends on your situation (e.g. family ties or investment).
LĐ, ĐT and TT visa holders can apply for a temporary residence card valid up to several years.
Extensions and overstay
If your plans change, arrange a visa through a Vietnamese sponsor before the 45 days end, or leave and re-enter (each entry is assessed by the border officer). Stay extensions have a state fee of USD 10 each and are decided case by case. Overstaying is fined under Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, starting at VND 0.5–2 million for under 16 days and rising with the length of the overstay. See our Vietnam visa overstay fine page.

FAQ: Vietnam visa for Swiss citizens
Do Swiss citizens need a visa for Vietnam in 2026?
Not for tourism of up to 45 days. Resolution 229/NQ-CP applies from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028. Other purposes or longer stays need an e-visa or another visa.
Can I attend business meetings on the Swiss visa exemption?
The resolution grants the exemption for tourism. For business trips, the safer choice is an e-visa or a DN visa sponsored by your Vietnamese partner.
Can I stay longer than 45 days?
Not on the exemption itself. Apply for a 90-day e-visa before you travel, or arrange a sponsored visa if you need more time.
I am a Swiss citizen of Vietnamese origin. What is best?
For frequent visits, the 5-year visa exemption certificate (up to 180 days per entry) is usually more convenient; for a single holiday, the 45-day exemption is enough.
