The Consulate General in Khon Kaen is in north-eastern Thailand, home to a long-established community of Thai people of Vietnamese origin. Its exact consular district is not stated on its homepage, so call or email to confirm whether to apply in Khon Kaen or Bangkok; if unsure, contact the mission closest to where you live.

Main consular services

The embassy and consulate general provides consular services to two main groups:

  • Vietnamese citizens: issuing, renewing and replacing passports; civil status registration (births, marriages, deaths and recording events registered locally); nationality procedures; certification, legalisation and attestation of documents; citizen protection in case of accidents, lost documents or detention.
  • Foreign nationals: Vietnamese visas and legalisation of documents for use in Vietnam. Today most tourists and short-term business travellers apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn without visiting the mission; visas stamped at the mission are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants who already hold an entry approval letter.

With short distances and many direct flights, most Thai travellers never need to visit a mission for a visa. Services for Vietnamese citizens (passports, births, marriages) remain the core work of both offices.

Do Thai citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Thai passport holders are visa-exempt for stays of up to 30 days under ASEAN arrangements (see the Vietnam visa exemption list). For longer stays, work or repeated entries, you can apply for an e-visa at evisa.gov.vn, valid for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry (government fee USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry). Foreigners of other nationalities living in Thailand follow the rules for their own passport; see Vietnam visa by nationality.

Legalising Thai documents for use in Vietnam

Vietnam has joined the Apostille Convention (in force since 11 September 2026). Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and, according to the Hague Conference status table, the Convention is expected to enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until then, Thai documents (degrees, police clearance for work permits, marriage documents, etc.) still need consular legalisation: authentication by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalisation at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate general, followed by a notarised Vietnamese translation. Once the Convention applies between the two countries, the apostille is expected to replace this chain; confirm with the receiving authority.

FAQ

What are the embassy’s opening hours in Bangkok?

The Ministry’s list does not state opening hours. Please check the official website or call before visiting, keeping Thai and Vietnamese public holidays in mind.

Do I need an appointment?

It depends on the service; for passports, civil status and legalisation, call or email to confirm your documents before going to Bangkok or Khon Kaen.

Should Thais apply at the embassy or online?

Trips of up to 30 days need no visa. For longer stays an online e-visa is the fastest option; mission visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports or for holders of an approval letter.
