Main consular services

For Vietnamese citizens

  • Issuing, renewing and replacing passports; travel documents for returning home after a passport is lost.
  • Civil status: registration of births, marriages and deaths, and recording of events registered in Myanmar.
  • Nationality matters: confirmation, acquisition, restoration or renunciation of Vietnamese nationality.
  • Consular certification and legalisation, plus some certified copies and signature attestations.
  • Citizen protection: assistance for citizens who have accidents, lose documents, are detained or need repatriation in an emergency. MOFA citizen protection hotline: +84 981 84 84 84.

For foreigners

Myanmar nationals and foreigners living in Myanmar can contact the embassy about visas and document legalisation. Most tourists and short-term business travellers now apply online for an e-visa at evisa.gov.vn (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) without visiting the embassy. Visas stamped at the mission are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for travellers who already hold an entry approval sponsored by an organisation or company in Vietnam.

Do Myanmar citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Under ASEAN bilateral agreements, Myanmar citizens with ordinary passports are visa-exempt for stays of up to 14 days in Vietnam (see the Vietnam visa exemption list). For longer stays, work or multiple entries, apply for an e-visa of up to 90 days (government fee USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry) or a visa matching your purpose. Country-by-country rules are on our Vietnam visa by nationality hub.

Legalising documents from Myanmar for use in Vietnam

Myanmar nationals who come to Vietnam to work, marry or study usually need degrees, police clearance certificates, birth certificates or single-status certificates issued in Myanmar.

Myanmar is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents issued there generally need consular legalisation before use in Vietnam:

  1. Certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or other competent authority) of Myanmar.
  2. Consular legalisation at the Embassy of Vietnam in Yangon.
  3. Vietnamese translation, notarised in Vietnam, before submission.

If a document has already been brought to Vietnam without legalisation, ask the receiving authority how to proceed – there is no lawful shortcut around this step.

Info Travel handles consular legalisation and notarised translation in Vietnam and can then take care of your Vietnam work permit once the documents are in order.

FAQ

What are the embassy’s opening hours?

The MOFA portal does not publish this mission’s opening hours. Check the “Lịch làm việc” (working schedule) section of the official website or call ahead, especially around local and Vietnamese public holidays.

Do I need an appointment?

The MOFA portal does not mention an appointment requirement. The safest approach is to call +95 1 7512279 or email in advance to confirm the documents to bring and when they are received.

Should I apply at the embassy or online for an e-visa?

Trips under 14 days need no visa. For longer trips or business travel, most people choose the e-visa because it is fully online, with no need to visit Yangon. An embassy visa suits diplomatic or official passports or travellers who already have an approval letter.
