Consular services for Thai citizens
The embassy and Thai foreign-ministry websites block automated reading, so we do not list procedures in detail. In general the consular section is the contact point for:
- protection of Thai citizens (accidents, lost documents, arrest, repatriation);
- identity and travel documents after a lost passport – ask whether passports can be issued in Hanoi;
- civil-registration and document certification for citizens;
- Thai visas for those who are not visa-exempt (many visa types are now filed online through Thailand’s e-Visa system).
Before you go
- Phone calls often do not reach the right person; follow the embassy’s official Facebook page for holiday closures and schedule changes.
- Read the requirements online beforehand; forms can be downloaded and completed in advance.
- Arrive early in the morning: complete files are usually accepted quickly, with collection in an afternoon window on the next working day or as stated on your receipt.
- Foreigners applying for Thai visas in Hanoi may have to prove legal residence in Vietnam (TRC, work permit) – bring notarised copies.
- Closed on Vietnamese and Thai holidays (Songkran in mid-April, the King’s birthday, etc.).
Common situations foreigners face
Lost Thai passport. Get a police report, then contact the embassy for a travel document or new passport. Your Vietnamese visa or entry stamp went with the passport, so you must complete exit procedures or obtain a new visa at the Immigration Department before leaving.
Passport expiring. Thai citizens enjoy short-stay visa exemption in Vietnam, but long-term residents with a work visa or temporary residence card must transfer it to the new passport.
Staying beyond the visa-exempt period. If you need longer, ask about a visa extension or a change of visa type before the stay expires.
Marriage, births, work permits. Thai documents (single-status certificates, criminal records, degrees) must be legalised and translated.
Thai passport help in Vietnam
We could not verify whether the embassy in Hanoi issues passports locally. Contact the embassy; in emergencies a travel document home is usually available. Either way, Info Travel handles the Vietnamese side: visa/TRC transfer, extensions while you wait and exit visas – within what the embassy permits.
Consular legalisation, certification (apostille from 2027) and notarised translation
Thailand acceded to the Apostille Convention (deposit 30 June 2026), but the Convention enters into force for Thailand only on 28 February 2027. Therefore:
- Until 27 February 2027 the traditional apostille vs consular legalisation chain still applies.
- From 28 February 2027, provided neither country objects to the other’s accession, an apostille alone may suffice. Re-check before you start a file.
a) Thai documents for Vietnam: authentication by the Department of Consular Affairs, Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok or a Vietnamese consulate in Thailand → notarised translation into Vietnamese. If the Thai mission in Vietnam certifies documents, you can instead certify there and then legalise at the Consular Department (Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs – ask first. From 28 February 2027: Thai apostille plus notarised translation. Exemptions only where a treaty provides them.
b) Vietnamese documents for Thailand: consular certification at the Consular Department or HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the Thai mission (where accepted) → Thai/English translation. From 28 February 2027: apostille from the Consular Department/HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs.
Info Travel handles translation, notarisation, consular certification/apostille at the Consular Department and embassy drop-off and collection. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
