Consular services for Slovak citizens

We have not been able to verify the official service list. As a rule, a Slovak embassy abroad is where citizens:

  • Get help in an emergency (lost documents, accident, arrest) and an emergency travel document.
  • Ask about passport procedures and civil registration (births, marriages) in Slovakia.
  • Have signatures or copies verified and documents legalised – callers mention a dedicated consular legalisation desk.
  • Vietnamese citizens apply for Schengen visas for Slovakia.

Ask the embassy which services are available in Hanoi before preparing your file.

What to know before you go

  • Phone first: several people say emails to the embassy can go unanswered for a long time, so a call is the quicker route.
  • When calling the legalisation desk, have the document details ready (type, issuing authority, purpose) to keep the conversation short.
  • Visitors describe the staff as polite and helpful in person.
  • Bring your Slovak passport/ID card and original documents.
  • The embassy closes on Vietnamese and Slovak holidays (e.g. 1 January – Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic, 29 August, 1 September, 17 November, Easter).

Common reasons foreigners contact their embassy in Vietnam

Lost passport: get a police report where it happened and contact the embassy about an emergency travel document. As EU citizens, Slovaks can also turn to another EU member state’s embassy if needed. Then arrange a new visa or exit procedures, since your Vietnamese visa was in the lost passport.

New passport: after renewal, transfer your visa or temporary residence card; if your permitted stay is ending, apply for a visa extension first.

Marrying a Vietnamese citizen: you need a Slovak certificate of marital status and birth certificate with an apostille and a notarised Vietnamese translation. Conversely, Vietnamese documents for registration in Slovakia need an apostille and a Slovak translation.

Work and study: Slovak degrees and criminal-record extracts (výpis z registra trestov) need an apostille and a notarised translation.

Visiting family can use the Vietnam e-visa.

Help with a Slovak passport in Vietnam

We could not verify whether the embassy in Hanoi accepts passport applications, so we make no claim. If it does not, citizens can apply in Slovakia or at another Slovak mission; in an emergency, request a temporary travel document. Biometric passport applications require the applicant in person.

Info Travel handles the Vietnamese side: translations, photos, contact guidance, transfer of visa/TRC to the new passport, visa extensions and exit formalities – within what the embassy permits.

Consular legalisation, MOFA certification and notarised translation

Slovakia has been party to the Apostille Convention since 2002 and did not object to Vietnam’s accession; the Convention applies to Vietnam from 11 September 2026.

a) Slovak documents for use in Vietnam: obtain an apostille from the competent Slovak authority (depending on the document), then a notarised Vietnamese translation. Legalisation via the Vietnamese Embassy in Bratislava is only needed where an apostille cannot be used. Unless exempted under an international treaty, documents need an apostille or legalisation.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in Slovakia: obtain an apostille from the Consular Department of MOFA or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, with a Slovak translation (ask the receiving Slovak office about its translation requirements). If the Slovak side still asks for legalisation, contact the embassy’s legalisation desk.

Info Travel offers the full package: translation, notarisation, apostille or consular certification, submission and collection. See consular legalisation in Vietnam and apostille vs consular legalisation; quotes on WhatsApp.
