Consular services for DPRK citizens

The embassy does not publish a list of consular services. A mission normally handles travel documents for its nationals, lost passports, identity and civil-status confirmations and consular protection. Any specific service must be confirmed directly with the embassy.

For foreigners, the most common reason to visit is collecting a DPRK visa once an authorised tour company has arranged the trip. The embassy is not a walk-in travel information office.

Before you visit

  • Be precise with the guards: some visitors have been pointed towards the South Korean or Chinese embassies by mistake. Say “Đại sứ quán Triều Tiên, 25 Cao Bá Quát” or carry the address printed in Vietnamese.
  • Come by arrangement: travellers collecting a visa on a date agreed with their tour operator are usually dealt with quickly; unannounced visitors are unlikely to be received.
  • Phone contact: feedback suggests calls are not always answered in full; ask a Vietnamese or Korean speaker to call, or work through your tour operator.
  • Bring: original passport, photos and your trip confirmation; dress neatly.
  • Closed on Vietnamese and DPRK public holidays.

What foreigners commonly need help with

Lost passport in Vietnam. DPRK citizens report the loss to the local police, then contact the embassy for a replacement document. Because the Vietnamese visa or residence status was tied to the old passport, a new visa or exit procedures with Vietnam Immigration follow.

New passport. Once a new passport is issued, the visa or temporary residence card must be transferred into it; if the permitted stay is ending, a visa extension may be possible.

Study, marriage and assignment papers. DPRK-issued documents used in Vietnam need legalisation and a notarised translation from Korean into Vietnamese.

Foreigners travelling to the DPRK. Visas are arranged through tour operators and issued only after approval. Info Travel does not handle DPRK visas, but can arrange your Vietnamese re-entry visa or a Vietnam e-visa for the return leg.

DPRK passport help in Vietnam

We could not verify whether the DPRK Embassy issues or renews passports in Hanoi; information on travel documents for DPRK citizens is not published. Citizens should ask the embassy directly.

Info Travel does not intervene in DPRK passport procedures. We help with the Vietnamese steps once new documents are issued: transferring the visa/TRC, stay extensions and exit visas – always within Vietnamese law and what the mission permits.

Consular legalisation, apostille, MOFA/DFA stamps and notarised translation

The DPRK is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so although the Convention applies to Vietnam from 11 September 2026, documents between the two countries still follow the traditional legalisation chain. Background: apostille vs consular legalisation.

a) DPRK documents for use in Vietnam: certification by the competent DPRK authority → legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Pyongyang; or certification at the DPRK Embassy in Hanoi (if offered) → legalisation at the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → notarised translation – unless exempted under an international treaty.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in the DPRK: consular certification at the Consular Department or HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the DPRK Embassy (ask first whether it accepts this) → with translation.

Info Travel handles the Vietnamese part: translation, notarisation, MOFA/DFA stamps, submission and collection. See consular legalisation in Vietnam; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.

FAQ

Where is the North Korean Embassy in Hanoi?

25 Cao Ba Quat Street, Hanoi. Don’t confuse it with the South Korean Embassy in the Xuan Tao diplomatic compound.

Can I apply for a DPRK tourist visa here directly?

Visas are normally issued only for trips arranged by an authorised tour operator; you collect yours by appointment.

Does the embassy have a website or email?

No public channels; contact it by phone on +84 24 3845 3008.

Can DPRK documents be apostilled for Vietnam?

No. The DPRK has not joined the Convention, so consular legalisation is still required.
