Consular services for Nigerian citizens
According to the official website, the embassy offers:
- Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC): an application letter to the Head of Mission stating the reason and your state and local government area of origin, a copy of your passport data page, two 4×6 cm colour photos, a tentative flight itinerary, a recommendation letter from a Nigerian community representative in Vietnam, the ETC form, original payment receipts and – for a lost passport – a police report in English and Vietnamese. Minors under 17 also need a consent letter from the father (or the mother if she has legal guardianship).
- Authentication of Nigerian-issued documents: birth certificates, declarations of age, certificates of single status, customary marriage documents, educational certificates, commercial documents, police good-conduct certificates and consular letters. Submit on Mondays, collect on Thursdays.
- Registration of Nigerians in Vietnam and letters of introduction.
- Nigerian visas for foreigners.
Before you visit
- Don’t go on a Friday for consular matters; Google Maps may show Friday hours, but the website clearly states the consular section is closed.
- Check first, pay later: every application is checked at the embassy before you pay into the embassy’s USD account at Vietcombank. Only use payment details given directly by the embassy.
- Appointments: use the booking page on the website; the WhatsApp number is for messages, not calls.
- At the counter: visitors note that the front desk is usually staffed by Vietnamese employees and the waiting room is small. Bring printed documents and a clear written summary of your request in English; for complex cases ask to see a consular officer.
- Villa 44/1 is next to the Kinder World kindergarten in Van Phuc – right beside the Pakistani Embassy at 44/2.
- Closed on Vietnamese and Nigerian holidays (for example Independence Day on 1 October and Democracy Day on 12 June).
What foreigners commonly need help with
Lost passport. Get a police report (in English and Vietnamese, as the embassy requires) and apply for an ETC. Because your Vietnamese visa is lost with the passport, you must complete exit procedures (an exit visa) with Vietnam Immigration before going to the airport.
Passport expiring. Watch the website for outreach passport dates; once you have the new passport, transfer your visa or temporary residence card. If the old passport expires before the next exercise, plan your visa extension around the remaining passport validity.
Marriage and work. Single-status certificates, birth certificates, degrees and police certificates from Nigeria must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, authenticated by the embassy, legalised at Vietnam’s Consular Department and given a notarised translation.
Letters of introduction. Some Vietnamese procedures (banks, schools) ask for one from the embassy.
Nigerian passport help in Vietnam
The Nigerian Embassy in Hanoi has no permanent passport desk. Instead, immigration officers from the Nigerian mission in Malaysia run periodic “passport intervention” exercises in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, announced on the website. Applicants must attend in person for biometrics. If you need to travel home urgently, the ETC is the solution.
Info Travel assists within what the embassy permits: tracking outreach dates, preparing photos and copies, translating the police report into English, and directions. On the Vietnamese side we handle stay extensions while you wait, transferring your visa/TRC to the new passport and the exit visa for ETC holders.
Consular legalisation, apostille, MOFA/DFA stamps and notarised translation
Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so even though the Convention applies to Vietnam from 11 September 2026, documents between the two countries still need the legalisation chain. Background: apostille vs consular legalisation.
a) Nigerian documents for use in Vietnam: certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja → legalisation by the Vietnamese mission accredited to Nigeria; or, after Abuja’s certification, authentication at the Nigerian Embassy in Hanoi (submit Monday, collect Thursday) → legalisation at the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → notarised Vietnamese translation – unless exempted under an international treaty.
b) Vietnamese documents for use in Nigeria: consular certification at the Consular Department or HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, then ask the Nigerian Embassy about legalisation (its website only describes Nigerian-issued documents), with an English translation.
Info Travel runs the whole chain: translation, notarisation, MOFA/DFA stamps, embassy submission and collection. See consular legalisation in Vietnam; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.
