Consular services for Greek citizens

The embassy’s Consular Office is headed by a First Counsellor. The Greek Foreign Ministry’s “Other services” page lists:

  • Passports: new issues and renewals, submitted in person with biometric data. Files are forwarded to the Hellenic Police.
  • Vital records: births, marriages and deaths of Greek citizens abroad.
  • National service matters for Greek men living abroad.
  • Verification of the authenticity of documents issued by states that are not party to the Hague Convention.
  • Digital consular services through e-proxeneio, with appointments via myConsulLive.

What to know before you go

  • You need an appointment to apply for or renew a passport. Email the Consular Office first.
  • Passport fees are paid in cash in Vietnamese dong.
  • Photos must be less than a month old, 4×6 cm, with a light background and facing forward.
  • The embassy warns that people on social media are falsely claiming to be staff and promoting “labour export programmes”. Trust only official channels.
  • The embassy closes on Vietnamese and Greek holidays, so call ahead.
  • +84 24 3715 2263 (Consular Office) is the main number shown on Google Maps. If you cannot get through, email the Consular Office and keep the correspondence.
  • Greek visa applications can take a long time, and progress is hard to check by phone or email. Apply several weeks before travel and keep copies of your passport and receipt.
  • Greek citizens with urgent document needs are usually helped quickly, so explain the emergency clearly when you get in touch.

Common situations that bring foreigners to the embassy

Lost passport: report it to the local police and the Consular Office. The official page says a new passport application is possible only 90 days after the loss, so ask the embassy about a temporary travel document if you need to travel home. You will also need a new visa or exit procedures, because the Vietnamese visa was in the lost passport.

Passport expiring: you can renew up to one year before expiry, and it takes about four to five weeks. Then transfer your visa or temporary residence card. You may need a visa extension in the meantime.

Marriage and births: Greek civil documents need an apostille and a notarised translation. Events that happen in Vietnam should be registered with the Consular Office.

Working in Vietnam: Greek criminal records and degrees need an apostille and a Vietnamese translation for the work permit file.

Help with a Greek passport in Vietnam

The Greek Embassy in Hanoi accepts new and renewal passport applications by appointment and in person only. It forwards the file to the Hellenic Police and hands over the passport when it arrives, in about four to five weeks. Passports issued after 1 September 2022 to adults and minors over 14 are valid for ten years.

Info Travel helps within what the embassy permits: arranging the appointment, compliant photos, translations of Vietnamese documents and travel for clients based in the south. Afterwards we transfer your visa or TRC and handle immigration steps. You still attend in person and give biometrics yourself.

Consular legalisation, certification and certified translation

Greece is a party to the Apostille Convention, which entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026. For public documents between the two countries, the apostille therefore replaces legalisation Greece did not object to Vietnam’s accession, so consular legalisation is only a fallback. See apostille vs consular legalisation.

Greek documents for use in Vietnam: get an apostille from the competent Greek authority. If the apostille does not apply, use legalisation at a Vietnamese mission instead. Then get a notarised Vietnamese translation. These steps apply unless a treaty provides an exemption.

Vietnamese documents for use in Greece: get the apostille or consular certification from the Consular Department or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, plus a Greek translation. The embassy’s “document verification” route is meant for countries outside the Hague Convention, so it may no longer be needed for Vietnam. Ask the embassy to be sure.

Info Travel handles the full chain: notarised translation, the foreign affairs stamp, and consular legalisation where still required. Ask for a quote on WhatsApp.
