Consular services for Chilean citizens

The embassy has its own consular section covering Vietnam and Laos. Rather than listing each service, its website points to Chile’s central portals:

  • serviciosconsulares.cl – registration and most consular procedures.
  • consulado.gob.cl – information for Chileans abroad, visas for Chile and returning home.
  • apostilla.gob.cl – online apostille for Chilean public documents.
  • In-person help at the consular section, 9 am–1 pm.

The embassy does not spell out whether passports, civil registration or notarial acts are handled in Hanoi. Call before visiting to confirm your matter can be done there.

Before you visit

  • The consular section is open mornings only; book ahead by phone.
  • Bring your Chilean cédula de identidad or passport plus originals of any documents involved.
  • Thuy Khue, along West Lake, has several diplomatic villas – tell your driver “Villa C8-D8”.
  • The embassy closes on Vietnamese and Chilean holidays (for example Fiestas Patrias, 18–19 September).
  • Living in Laos? Contact the embassy first – Hanoi also covers Chileans there.
  • Google Maps still shows a couple of old pins labelled “Embassy of Chile” in Hoan Kiem (Ly Thai To and Ngo Quyen streets) – these are former or misplaced locations. Navigate to 14 Thuy Khue on West Lake instead.
  • There is sometimes construction around Thuy Khue and a few lanes shown on the map may be blocked, so allow extra time to find the way in.
  • The consular team is small: when the consul is travelling or on leave, many matters have to wait. Even in an urgent case, phone first to make sure someone can see you; if nobody answers, go in person during the morning.
  • Staff include a Vietnamese speaker, which helps when you need to discuss documents issued by Vietnamese authorities.

What foreigners usually need help with

Lost passport: report the loss to the local police, then contact the Chilean Embassy for travel-document guidance. Once you have a new document, you will need a new visa or exit procedures for foreigners, because your Vietnamese visa was in the lost passport.

Passport expiring: ask the embassy how to renew from Vietnam. After you receive the new passport, transfer your visa or temporary residence card; if your stay is ending, you may also need a visa extension.

Marriage, birth, work permit: Chilean birth certificates, criminal records and diplomas need an apostille on apostilla.gob.cl and a Vietnamese translation. A child born in Vietnam may need registration with Chile’s civil registry.

Signatures, powers of attorney, voting: ask the consular section about signature authentication or registering to vote abroad.

Chileans visiting Vietnam for a short stay usually travel on a Vietnam e-visa.

Chilean passport help in Vietnam

The Chilean Embassy’s website does not state that passport applications are accepted in Hanoi, so we do not claim that it issues or renews passports in Vietnam – call +84 24 3935 1147 or check serviciosconsulares.cl. If it cannot be done locally, the usual alternatives are applying in Chile or at another Chilean mission, and in an emergency asking for a temporary travel document. Where biometrics are needed, the applicant must attend personally. Info Travel takes care of the Vietnamese side: visa extensions while you wait, transferring your visa or residence card to the new passport, and exit formalities.

Consular legalisation, MOFA certification and notarised translation

Chile joined the Apostille Convention in 2016, and the Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026 – a big change for Chileans here.

a) Chilean documents for use in Vietnam: get an online apostille at apostilla.gob.cl or, if a Vietnamese office asks for it, legalisation through the Vietnamese Embassy in Santiago. Then arrange a notarised translation into Vietnamese. The website does not say whether the Chilean Embassy in Hanoi certifies documents. Unless exempted by an international treaty, documents need an apostille or legalisation.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in Chile: obtain an apostille or consular certification from the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs, plus a Spanish translation. If a Chilean authority still wants legalisation, ask the consular section in Hanoi.

Info Travel handles the whole chain: translation, notarisation, MOFA/DOFA stamp or apostille, submission and collection. More on consular legalisation in Vietnam and apostille vs consular legalisation; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.
