Consular services for Algerian citizens
- Consular protection: assistance for Algerians in distress, after loss of documents, arrest or when family needs to be contacted.
- Guidance on passports and travel documents for Algerian citizens (ask the embassy what can be processed in Hanoi).
- Civil-status and personal-document matters for Algerians living in Vietnam, where the embassy is competent.
- Document certification/legalisation – confirm with the embassy whether this is done in Hanoi.
We could not verify a published list of the Algerian embassy’s services; the items above describe normal consular functions and are not a guarantee.
What to know before you visit
- Call +84 24 3825 3865 or email ambalghanoi@ambalgvn.org.vn first to confirm the address, reception hours and documents required.
- Bring your Algerian passport (or a copy if it was lost) and your current Vietnamese visa or residence card.
- Vietnamese-language papers usually need a French or Arabic translation – ask which language the embassy accepts.
- Expect closures on Vietnamese and Algerian public holidays (e.g. Independence Day on 5 July, Revolution Day on 1 November) and Islamic holidays.
- The embassy is on Phan Chu Trinh Street near the Opera House – parking is difficult in this central area, so take a taxi or ride-hailing car.
- Visitors are received in two short sessions (until 11:30 and until 16:00); arrive at the start of a session so there is time to process your file.
- Vietnamese staff help with paperwork, which is useful for Vietnamese spouses or relatives of Algerian citizens; documents for the consular officer should be in Arabic or French.
What foreigners usually need help with at the embassy
Most Algerian citizens contact the embassy not for diplomacy but because of a specific paperwork problem. These are the situations we see most often:
- Lost or stolen passport: report it to the local ward police to get a confirmation, then apply at the embassy for a new passport or emergency travel document. Because your Vietnamese visa or residence card was in the old passport, you must also obtain a new visa or exit visa from the Immigration Department before leaving Vietnam.
- Passport about to expire: get the new passport, then transfer your visa or temporary residence card to it; if the visa is also running out, combine this with a visa extension.
- Marriage, a child’s birth registration, a work permit: Vietnamese authorities usually ask for a certificate of marital status, birth certificate, police certificate or degrees from Algeria, apostilled (or legalised if outside the Convention) and with a notarised translation.
- Signature certification: powers of attorney, declarations and contracts that need a certified signature before being sent home.
- Citizen registration and voting: many countries encourage citizens abroad to register with their mission for updates and emergency support.
Help with Algerian passports in Vietnam
We could not verify whether the Algeria embassy in Hanoi issues or renews ordinary passports in Vietnam. Some countries only issue emergency travel documents at their missions, while regular passports must be applied for at home or through another mission in the region. Ask the embassy directly before making plans.
Wherever the passport is issued, Info Travel takes care of the Vietnamese side: transferring your visa or temporary residence card to the new passport, obtaining a new visa or exit visa when you only hold a temporary travel document, and a visa extension while you wait. We can also help with appointments, forms, photos and translations – within what the embassy permits; applicants normally attend in person for biometrics.
Consular legalisation, consular certification (MOFA / Department of Foreign Affairs stamp) and notarised translation
The Apostille Convention has applied to Vietnam since 11 September 2026, and Algeria is also a party (since 9 July 2026). Public documents between the two countries therefore now use an apostille instead of the longer consular legalisation chain. The difference is explained in apostille vs consular legalisation.
a) Documents issued in Algeria for use in Vietnam
Public documents such as birth and marriage certificates, police certificates and degrees receive an apostille from the competent authority in Algeria and then a notarised Vietnamese translation (originals are usually in Arabic or French). No further legalisation by a Vietnamese mission is needed.
Fallback – consular legalisation: documents executed by diplomatic or consular agents (for example papers issued by the Algerian embassy in Hanoi itself) and administrative documents dealing directly with commercial or customs operations fall outside the Apostille Convention. They still need certification and legalisation at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, or legalisation by the Vietnamese mission in Algeria, unless an international treaty provides an exemption.
b) Vietnamese documents for use in Algeria
Vietnamese public documents are apostilled by the Consular Department (MOFA) in Hanoi or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs and then translated into a language accepted in Algeria; legalisation at the Algerian embassy is no longer required. Check translation requirements with the receiving authority in Algeria first.
Info Travel runs the whole chain: translation, notarisation, the MOFA/Department of Foreign Affairs stamp, and submission and collection at the mission. See our consular legalisation service. Quotes per file on WhatsApp +84327828822.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Algerian embassy in Hanoi?
At 13 Phan Chu Trinh Street, Cua Nam Ward, Hanoi, a few minutes’ walk from the Opera House. Google Maps shows the correct location.
Does Algeria have a consulate in Ho Chi Minh City?
According to the list of foreign missions in Vietnam, Algeria has only its embassy in Hanoi. Algerians in the south still deal with Hanoi; Info Travel’s office in Ho Chi Minh City can handle Vietnamese visa paperwork locally.
How do I use an Arabic-language Algerian certificate in Vietnam?
Since 11 September 2026 an Algerian public document only needs an apostille from the competent Algerian authority, followed by a notarised Vietnamese translation; consular legalisation remains a fallback for documents outside the Convention. Info Travel translates from Arabic and French.
What if I lose my Algerian passport in Vietnam?
Report it to the local police, contact the embassy for a replacement document, then obtain a new visa or exit visa from the Vietnamese immigration authority. Info Travel can handle that last step.
