For foreigners
DPRK citizens and foreigners residing in Pyongyang can contact the embassy about Vietnamese visas. Most tourists and short-term business travellers now apply online for an e-visa at evisa.gov.vn (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) without visiting the embassy. Visas stamped at the mission are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for travellers who already hold an entry approval sponsored by an organisation or company in Vietnam.
Do North Korean citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
The DPRK is not on the visa exemption list, so ordinary passport holders need a visa. Since 2023 Vietnam has issued e-visas to citizens of all countries for up to 90 days (government fee USD 25 single, USD 50 multiple entry) – see our e-visa application guide. Diplomatic and official passports may fall under separate bilateral arrangements; ask the embassy.
Legalising documents from North Korea for use in Vietnam
Documents issued by DPRK authorities (degrees, civil status papers, background certificates) must be legalised before Vietnamese authorities will accept them.
The DPRK (North Korea) is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents issued there generally need consular legalisation before use in Vietnam:
- Certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or other competent authority) of the DPRK.
- Consular legalisation at the Embassy of Vietnam in Pyongyang.
- Vietnamese translation, notarised in Vietnam, before submission.
If a document has already been brought to Vietnam without legalisation, ask the receiving authority how to proceed – there is no lawful shortcut around this step.
Info Travel handles consular legalisation and notarised translation in Vietnam and can then take care of your Vietnam work permit once the documents are in order.
