Consular services for Italian citizens
The “Services for Italian citizens” section of the consulate’s website covers:
- Passports and identity documents (e-passports require the applicant in person for fingerprints and signature).
- Emergency Travel Documents (ETD).
- Civil status – marital status, transcription of marriages and births.
- Notary services.
- Translation and legalisation of documents (with a list of translators in HCMC and Hanoi).
- AIRE registration for Italians residing abroad.
- Electoral services.
- Emergency assistance, tracing relatives, inheritance proceedings abroad, repatriation of remains.
The visa office (hochiminh.visti@esteri.it) handles Schengen and Italian national visas for Vietnamese applicants.
Before you visit
- Contact first: opening hours are not public, so email hochiminh.consolato@esteri.it or call to book and confirm reception times.
- E-passports: forms and documents can be sent in advance by post; you then attend to give fingerprints and sign.
- ID: bring your passport/CIE and Italian tax code.
- Office tower: President Place is on the corner of Nguyen Du and Le Thanh Ton; visitors show ID before going up to the 10th floor, so arrive 15–20 minutes early.
- Holidays: closed on Vietnamese and Italian public holidays – check website notices.
- No visitor parking: the building car park is for registered staff only, so come by taxi or ride-hailing, or use a nearby parking lot.
- Slow email replies: answers can take a week or more; put your full name, date of birth and request in the subject line, and phone only when it is genuinely urgent.
- Procedures involving offices in Italy (AIRE, civil-status transcription, a child’s passport) can take many months – start well before you need to travel.
What foreigners most often need when they contact the Consulate General of Italy
These are the situations we see most often among our clients:
- Passport lost or stolen: start with a police loss report. With it, the Consulate General of Italy can consider issuing an emergency travel document or a replacement passport. The new document carries no Vietnamese visa, so you will need a new visa or an exit visa before going to the airport – see exit procedures for foreigners.
- Passport validity running short: Vietnamese authorities require enough remaining validity to issue a temporary residence card or a visa extension. After renewal, the visa or card has to be moved to the new passport.
- Personal-status documents: proof of marital status to marry a Vietnamese citizen, birth documents for a child born in Vietnam, degrees and police records for a work permit.
- Notarising signatures on declarations and powers of attorney for use in Italy.
- Citizen registration and overseas voting.
Help with Italian passports in Vietnam
The Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City accepts passport applications. Applications normally go to the office for your place of residence; another office can process them only with written delegation, which may take longer. An e-passport requires the applicant’s physical presence (children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting); if fingerprints temporarily cannot be taken, a temporary passport may be issued.
Info Travel prepares forms, photos and translations of Vietnamese documents, contacts the consulate for your slot and briefs you in detail. With the new passport in hand, we transfer your visa or temporary residence card to it, or obtain an exit visa if the old passport was lost. We assist only within what the consulate permits; biometrics and signatures are done by the applicant in person.
Consular legalisation, consular certification (Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamp) and notarised translation
From 11 September 2026 Vietnam applies the Apostille Convention (Hague, 1961). Italy is a party and did not object to Vietnam’s accession, so public documents between the two countries are now authenticated with an apostille instead of the former two-stamp process.
- Italian documents for use in Vietnam: obtain an apostille from the competent Italian authority (Prefettura or Procura della Repubblica, depending on the document), then have a Vietnamese translation made and notarised – no legalisation by the Vietnamese mission in Italy is needed.
- Vietnamese documents for use in Italy: obtain an apostille from the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs or the Consular Department in Hanoi, then translate into Italian as the receiving office requires.
- Exceptions: documents drawn up by the Consulate General itself (such as signature certifications) and certain commercial or customs documents fall outside the Convention – they are still certified at the consulate and legalised at the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs/Consular Department, unless a treaty provides an exemption.
The consulate’s translation and legalisation page points to the Consular Office of the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs (184 bis Pasteur), open Monday–Thursday 08:00–10:00 and 13:30–16:00 and Saturday 08:00–11:00 (as listed there; please re-check) – this is also where apostilles are requested in the south.
Info Travel handles the whole chain: translation, notarisation, the Ministry/Department of Foreign Affairs stamp, and submitting and collecting files at the mission – see consular legalisation in Vietnam. Costs depend on the document type and page count; message us on WhatsApp +84327828822 for a quote.
