Consular services for Thai citizens

The official site cannot be read automatically; the following is general, so please double-check:

  • Protection of Thai citizens in the south: accidents, lost documents, detention, repatriation.
  • Travel documents/passports after loss – ask the Consulate-General about the procedure.
  • Document certification and civil registration for citizens.
  • Thai visas for foreign residents of the south, including work visas and the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV).

Before you go

  • Windows are very short, with the afternoon ending at 15:00 – arrive at opening time.
  • Thai citizens are often served first without an appointment; visa applicants should expect to wait.
  • Phones often go unanswered at busy times; bring a complete, triple-checked file so you do not have to return.
  • Long-term visas (such as the DTV) may trigger requests for more documents and delays; do not book flights or hotels until you have a decision.
  • There is parking nearby; Tran Quoc Thao gets busy around midday.
  • Closed on Vietnamese and Thai public holidays.

Common situations foreigners face

Passport lost in HCMC, Phu Quoc or Can Tho. Report it to the police, contact the Consulate-General for a travel document or new passport, then obtain a visa/exit permission at the Immigration Office – see exit procedures.

Passport expiring while working. Thai engineers and managers in the industrial zones around HCMC with a temporary residence card or work visa must transfer it to the new passport.

Visa-exempt stay running out. For a longer stay, look at a visa extension or a change of visa purpose; for later trips a Vietnam e-visa may help.

Marriage, births, work permits – Thai documents need consular legalisation (apostille from 28 February 2027) and a notarised translation.

Thai passport help in Vietnam

We could not verify whether the Consulate-General issues passports locally; please ask directly. Info Travel helps with the rest: preparing and translating any Vietnamese documents requested, then transferring your visa/TRC to the new passport or obtaining an exit visa – within what the Consulate-General permits.

Consular legalisation, certification (apostille from 2027) and notarised translation

Thailand acceded to the Apostille Convention (deposit 30 June 2026), but the Convention enters into force for Thailand only on 28 February 2027. Therefore:

  • Until 27 February 2027 the traditional apostille vs consular legalisation chain still applies.
  • From 28 February 2027, provided neither country objects to the other’s accession, an apostille alone may suffice. Re-check before you start a file.

a) Thai documents for Vietnam: authentication by the Department of Consular Affairs, Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok or a Vietnamese consulate in Thailand → notarised translation into Vietnamese. If the Thai mission in Vietnam certifies documents, you can instead certify there and then legalise at the Consular Department (Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs – ask first. From 28 February 2027: Thai apostille plus notarised translation. Exemptions only where a treaty provides them.

b) Vietnamese documents for Thailand: consular certification at the Consular Department or HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the Thai mission (where accepted) → Thai/English translation. From 28 February 2027: apostille from the Consular Department/HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs.

Info Travel’s central-HCMC office handles translation, notarisation, certification at the Department of Foreign Affairs and drop-off/collection at the Consulate-General. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
