What Is a Visa Run in Vietnam and When Does It Make Sense?
A visa run is leaving Vietnam for a short trip and re-entering, so that a new entry stamp starts a fresh period of stay. Foreigners use it in three situations: the current stay is ending and an extension is not possible; a newly issued entry document has to be activated by an entry; or a visa-free stay has run out and the person wants to restart it.
The rule that catches people out
You must already hold a valid document to re-enter Vietnam — an e-visa, an approval letter, or a visa-exempt nationality. Leaving first and arranging the return document afterwards is how travellers end up stuck on the other side of the border. Arrange it before you go.
Usual route from Ho Chi Minh City
The Moc Bai international border gate in Tay Ninh province, done in a day with a private car. Details and what is included: visa run via Moc Bai.
Before you choose it
- Check the rules of both countries — the neighbouring country may require its own visa for your nationality.
- Border officers can question travellers who repeat the pattern often; a visa run is not a residence strategy.
- If you work in Vietnam you need a work permit and an LD visa; if you live here with family, a residence card is cheaper across a year.
