What foreigners commonly need help with
Lost passport. Report it to the ward police and get confirmation; book a nødpass appointment in Hanoi or at the Honorary Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnamese visa in the old passport can no longer be used, so before flying you need a new visa or exit procedures.
Passport renewal. Processing usually takes 2–3 weeks; adults collect in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City by arrangement. Then transfer your visa or temporary residence card – note that the old passport is returned to you and valid visa pages are not shredded.
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen, working in Vietnam. A marital-status certificate from the Tax Administration (Skatteetaten), a police certificate (politiattest) and degrees need an apostille and a notarised Vietnamese translation.
Vietnamese documents for Norway (family reunification, study): they must be notarised, translated into English and apostilled.
Staying longer than planned. A visa extension or a switch to a residence card may be possible.
Norwegian passport help in Vietnam
The Norwegian Embassy in Hanoi accepts passport applications for adults and children. Adults must attend in person with a valid passport or one expired no more than three months. For children under 18, both parents must consent in person (or have registered permanent consent); non-Norwegian ID must be presented with a legalised copy. Biometrics: adults and children over 12 give photo, fingerprints and signature; ages 10–12 photo and signature; under 10 photo only.
Info Travel assists within what the embassy allows: drafting the booking email, preparing copies and translations/legalisation of a Vietnamese parent’s ID, and directions. Once the new passport is ready we transfer the visa/TRC, extend your stay if needed, or arrange exit formalities for nødpass holders.
Consular legalisation, apostille, MOFA/DFA stamps and notarised translation
Norway has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 1983 and did not object to Vietnam’s accession. From 11 September 2026 the apostille replaces legalisation for most public documents between the two countries – as the Norwegian Embassy itself confirms. Background: apostille vs consular legalisation.
a) Norwegian documents for use in Vietnam: obtain an apostille from the competent Norwegian authority, then a notarised Vietnamese translation. Legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Oslo is only a fallback – unless exempted under an international treaty.
b) Vietnamese documents for use in Norway: per the embassy, documents must be notarised first; if only in Vietnamese, add a notarised English translation; both the document and the translation are apostilled by the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs. Embassy legalisation (free, by appointment, normally submitted by the owner) is still required for documents issued by diplomatic/consular missions and for administrative documents relating to commercial or customs operations.
Info Travel runs the whole chain: notarisation, English–Vietnamese translation, apostille at the Consular Department/DFA and legalisation appointments where needed. See consular legalisation in Vietnam; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.
