Consular services for Sri Lankan citizens
We found no embassy website of its own, and the missions directory on the Sri Lankan foreign-ministry site would not load. So this is general – call to confirm the procedure you need:
- Protection of Sri Lankan citizens in difficulty (lost documents, accidents, detention, repatriation).
- Travel documents after a lost passport and information on passport procedures – ask the embassy directly.
- Attestation of some documents – visitors report getting papers printed and verified here.
- Liaison with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for document authentication through the e-DAS system (see legalisation below).
- Visa/ETA information, trade and tourism promotion.
Before you go
- It is a small embassy with few staff – call ahead to make sure the right officer is in.
- Unlike many missions in Hanoi, the phone here is usually answered and staff explain patiently; use that to get the document list before visiting.
- Bring your Sri Lankan passport (or a copy if lost), your Vietnamese residence papers and any related documents.
- Closed on Vietnamese holidays and Sri Lankan holidays (e.g. National Day on 4 February, Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April).
Common situations foreigners face
Lost passport. Report it to the local police for a confirmation; contact the embassy about a travel document or replacement passport. Your Vietnamese visa was in the lost passport, so you need a new visa or exit permission from immigration before leaving – see exit procedures.
Passport expiring. Do not wait until under six months: a new passport can take a while if the file goes back to Sri Lanka. Once you have it, transfer your visa or reissue your temporary residence card under the new number.
Working in Vietnam. Sri Lankan workers, engineers and teachers need legalised criminal records and degrees for a work permit, then a work visa and TRC.
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen. The Sri Lankan partner needs a single-status certificate and birth certificate, legalised and translated.
Visa running out while waiting for papers – see visa extension.
Sri Lankan passport help in Vietnam
We could not verify whether the embassy in Hanoi accepts and issues passports locally or forwards applications to the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka. Call +84 24 3734 1894 to ask. In an emergency the usual option is a one-way travel document home.
Wherever the passport is issued, Info Travel handles the Vietnamese side: transferring your visa and TRC, extending your visa while you wait and arranging exit visas. We also translate and notarise Vietnamese documents the embassy asks for – within what the embassy permits.
Consular legalisation, certification and notarised translation
Sri Lanka is not a party to the Apostille Convention (HCCH status table), so the Convention that entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026 does not apply between the two countries. The apostille vs consular legalisation chain still applies:
a) Sri Lankan documents for Vietnam: authentication by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs Division, via e-DAS) → legalisation at the Vietnamese mission accredited to Sri Lanka → notarised translation into Vietnamese. If the Sri Lankan Embassy in Hanoi certifies documents, you can instead have them certified there and then legalised at the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs – ask the embassy first. Exemptions apply only where a treaty provides them.
b) Vietnamese documents for Sri Lanka: consular certification at the Consular Department or HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs → legalisation at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Hanoi (if offered) → English translation where needed.
Info Travel handles it all: translation, notarisation, MOFA/Department of Foreign Affairs certification and embassy submission and collection. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
