Consular services for Swedish citizens
- Provisional passports in emergencies – issued in Hanoi; the HCMC honorary consulate issues them for one-way travel to Sweden (paused 14 October – 4 November 2026; contact Hanoi during that period).
- Collection of passports and ID cards produced in Sweden or at another embassy and sent to Hanoi or HCMC (fee); only the holder may collect (a guardian for a minor).
- Emergency help for citizens through the foreign ministry’s 24/7 duty service (UD-jouren).
- Biometrics for Swedish residence-permit applications – at the Hanoi embassy only, booked via migration.bangkok@gov.se.
Before you go
- No appointment, no entry – including for consular matters.
- Google Maps still shows an old “Embassy of Sweden” pin at 2 Nui Truc (Van Phuc area). That is not the current address – go to Daeha, 360 Kim Ma.
- Daeha has a reception desk and access control; bring your passport or ID to sign in for the 15th floor.
- Phone hours are very short; if you cannot get through, email with your number and ask for a call back.
- Closed on Vietnamese and Swedish holidays (such as Midsummer and National Day on 6 June).
Common situations foreigners face
Lost passport. Report it to the police, then contact the embassy (or the honorary consulate in HCMC) for a provisional passport. Your Vietnamese visa was in the old passport, so you need a new visa or exit permission before flying – see exit procedures.
Passport expiring while living in Vietnam. Since ordinary passports cannot be applied for here, you must apply in Sweden or at a Swedish embassy in the region that issues passports, then collect in Hanoi/HCMC if you wish. Plan the trip and make sure your visa or temporary residence card lets you re-enter Vietnam; afterwards transfer it to the new passport.
Marriage, births, work permits. Certificates of no impediment, Skatteverket extracts and criminal records need an apostille and a notarised Vietnamese translation.
Staying longer than planned while waiting for documents – you may need a visa extension.
Swedish passport help in Vietnam
According to the embassy, ordinary Swedish passports and ID cards cannot be applied for in Vietnam. Apply in Sweden or at a nearby Swedish embassy that is a passport authority (in person, for biometrics), then choose delivery to Hanoi or HCMC. In urgent cases the embassy issues a provisional passport.
Info Travel does not replace the Swedish authorities’ role, but helps you plan: checking your visa/TRC for smooth exit and re-entry, obtaining a Vietnam e-visa or suitable visa for your return, and transferring your visa/TRC to the new passport afterwards.
Apostille, consular legalisation and notarised translation
Sweden has been party to the Apostille Convention since 1999 and did not object to Vietnam; the Convention has applied to Vietnam since 11 September 2026.
a) Swedish documents for Vietnam: get an apostille in Sweden (usually from a notarius publicus), then a notarised translation into Vietnamese. Legalisation via the Vietnamese Embassy in Stockholm is a fallback, unless a treaty exempts the document – see apostille vs consular legalisation.
b) Vietnamese documents for Sweden: apostille from the Consular Department (Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs; add a Swedish or English translation when Skatteverket or Migrationsverket asks.
Info Travel handles translation, notarisation, apostille submission and collection. See our consular legalisation service; prices on WhatsApp.
