Consular services for Salvadoran citizens
The Foreign Ministry’s consular services page lists what Salvadoran embassies and consulates abroad do:
- Ordinary passports for Salvadorans living abroad.
- The DUI national identity document (Documento Único de Identidad).
- Travel authorisations for minors.
- Civil registration and migration records.
- Notarised public instruments and consular visas.
This is the general list. The official site does not confirm which of these the Hanoi office provides, so check with the embassy first.
What to know before you go
- Phone or email to arrange a visit. The office is in a commercial tower and may not take walk-ins.
- For identity documents, bring your DUI, old passport, birth certificate and photos.
- Expect to communicate in Spanish or English. Prepare translations of any Vietnamese documents.
- The embassy closes on Vietnamese and Salvadoran holidays, such as Independence Day on 15 September.
- Google Maps currently has no listing for the Embassy of El Salvador in Hanoi, so do not rely on a map pin. Contact the embassy first to confirm the address, floor and visiting hours.
- Office towers such as Capital Place usually ask visitors to register at the lobby reception and show ID before going upstairs.
Common situations that bring foreigners to the embassy
Lost passport: report it to local police and contact the embassy about a replacement document. Then apply for a new visa or complete exit procedures, because your Vietnamese visa was in the lost passport.
Expired passport: when you get the new passport, transfer your visa or temporary residence card. If your visa runs out while you wait, arrange a visa extension.
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen: you need a Salvadoran birth certificate and proof of single status, apostilled and translated into Vietnamese with notarisation.
Children travelling: travel authorisations for minors are a standard consular service. Ask the embassy if your child is travelling alone or with one parent.
Work permits: degrees and criminal records need an apostille and a notarised translation.
Help with a Salvadoran passport in Vietnam
El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry says its missions abroad can issue ordinary passports, but we could not verify whether the Hanoi office accepts passport applications. Ask the embassy. If it cannot be done in Vietnam, you may need to apply through another mission or in El Salvador, and use an emergency travel document to return home if needed.
Info Travel helps within what is permitted. We prepare and translate documents and guide your contact with the embassy. Afterwards we transfer your visa or TRC to the new passport, extend your stay or handle exit formalities. You still attend in person whenever the embassy requires biometrics.
Consular legalisation, certification and certified translation
El Salvador has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 1996, and the Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026. For public documents between the two countries, an apostille therefore usually replaces consular legalisation, unless either side has objected to the accession. Confirm with the authority that will receive the document. See apostille vs consular legalisation.
Salvadoran documents for use in Vietnam: get an apostille from El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry. If the apostille does not apply, use legalisation through the Vietnamese mission covering El Salvador instead. Then get a notarised Vietnamese translation. These steps apply unless a treaty grants an exemption.
Vietnamese documents for use in El Salvador: get the apostille or consular certification from the Consular Department in Hanoi or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, plus a Spanish translation.
Info Travel offers the full package: notarised translation between Vietnamese, Spanish and English, the foreign affairs stamp, and consular legalisation where still needed. Ask for a quote on WhatsApp.
