Consular services for New Zealand citizens

We could not access a dedicated MFAT page for the Consulate-General. Based on the embassy’s page and the experience of recent visitors, the usual services are:

  • witnessing signatures, affidavits and statutory declarations for use in New Zealand – visitors report the fee is collected in Vietnamese dong cash;
  • emergency help for citizens: accidents, hospitalisation, arrest, lost passports;
  • guidance on urgent passport applications and emergency travel documents (ask first whether Ho Chi Minh City issues them).

The Consulate-General is also New Zealand’s trade and education hub in the south, but that work is separate from consular services.

Before you visit

  • The map pin can be wrong: several visitors say Google Maps sends them to number 161 instead of 235 Dong Khoi. Look for the HSBC branch in The Metropolitan and go up from there.
  • Building security: reception records your reason for visiting and issues a visitor pass before you reach the lifts; on Level 8 staff will direct you. Bring your original passport.
  • Book first: visitors recommend calling ahead so the appointment runs smoothly.
  • Bring VND cash: witnessing fees are payable in dong; there are money changers nearby if needed.
  • Closed on Vietnamese and New Zealand public holidays.

What foreigners commonly need help with

Lost passport in Ho Chi Minh City. Report it to the ward police and get confirmation; apply for an urgent passport with the New Zealand Passport Office or ask the consulate about an emergency travel document. Because your Vietnamese visa is gone too, the last step is a new visa or exit procedures at the Ho Chi Minh City Immigration Office.

New passport. Once your new passport arrives from New Zealand, transfer your visa or temporary residence card into it; anyone on an e-visa linked to the old passport number needs a new one.

Marriage and employment paperwork. New Zealanders marrying a Vietnamese citizen or applying for a work permit in the south need New Zealand documents with an apostille and a notarised translation.

Signing documents for home. Bank authorities, property paperwork and statutory declarations are the most common reasons people visit.

New Zealand passport help in Vietnam

The Consulate-General does not issue ordinary passports: New Zealand passports are decided by the Passport Office in Wellington, applications are mainly online, and passports are couriered. For urgent travel there are two options – an urgent passport application, or an emergency travel document lodged with a post that issues them (short validity, not accepted everywhere).

Info Travel helps with compliant photos, translating the loss report, completing forms and, above all, the Vietnamese side: extending your stay while you wait, transferring the visa/TRC to the new passport, a new visa or exit formalities. We only assist within what the New Zealand authorities permit.

Consular legalisation, apostille, MOFA/DFA stamps and notarised translation

From 11 September 2026 the Apostille Convention applies to Vietnam; New Zealand is a party and did not object. Southern residents benefit directly, because the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs is one of Vietnam’s two apostille authorities. Background: apostille vs consular legalisation.

a) New Zealand documents for use in Vietnam: apostille from the Department of Internal Affairs in New Zealand → notarised Vietnamese translation → submit to the Vietnamese authority. The old route (authentication in New Zealand plus legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Wellington) is only needed if the receiving office asks, unless exempted under an international treaty.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in New Zealand: apostille at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs or the Consular Department in Hanoi, with an English translation.

Info Travel handles everything: translation, notarisation, apostille/DFA stamp, submission and collection. See consular legalisation in Vietnam; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.
