Consular services for British nationals
GOV.UK states that the Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General offer the same set of services:
- Emergency Travel Documents for lost, stolen, damaged or expired passports – apply online at gov.uk/emergency-travel-document.
- Notarial and documentary services: marital-status affirmations (commonly needed to marry in Vietnam), name affirmations, certified copies of UK passports and driving licences.
- Support letters for permanent residence for spouses of Vietnamese citizens and letters of no objection for adoption (applied for online, collected in person).
- Emergency help: hospitalisation, arrest, scams or crime, and contacting family.
UK consular marriages are conducted at the Embassy in Hanoi. The Consulate General does not extend Vietnamese visas – that is a matter for Vietnam Immigration.
Before you go
- Book online in advance. Visitors report being turned away at the guard post without an appointment, and the booking system and phone line are not always easy to use – book early, especially ahead of a wedding date.
- Once you have a slot, a marital-status affirmation is typically done in about half an hour. Print the form and bring your passport and booking confirmation.
- For your Vietnamese partner’s details, recent applicants say the post no longer accepts addresses from ID cards issued before the 2025 ward changes; details from the VNeID app or a ward People’s Committee confirmation are accepted.
- Entry is through the security guard house at the gate; follow the guards’ instructions on bags and electronics.
- Google Maps has a stray pin named “Tổng Lãnh Sự Quán Anh” that shows the Hanoi Embassy’s address – navigate to 25 Le Duan, next to the US Consulate General.
- Closed on Vietnamese and UK public holidays; check GOV.UK before going.
Why foreigners usually contact the Consulate General
Passport lost in Ho Chi Minh City or the south. Report it online to HM Passport Office, obtain a police report, apply for an ETD and book a collection slot. You then need exit procedures (an exit visa) because your visa or entry stamp was in the lost passport. Some travellers have received inaccurate advice about transiting a third country on an ETD – confirm with your airline before buying tickets.
Renewing a passport. Apply online with HM Passport Office; when the new passport arrives, transfer your visa or temporary residence card at the immigration office. If you need more time, consider a visa extension or a new Vietnam e-visa.
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen. The most common reason Britons in the south book: the marital-status affirmation, followed by consular certification and a notarised translation for the ward People’s Committee or Department of Justice. Those taking a job need apostilled UK degrees and police certificates.
Getting a British passport while in Vietnam
The Consulate General does not issue or renew British passports – applications are made online at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport and the passport is sent from the UK. For urgent travel, nationals apply for an ETD and normally collect it in person at an appointment.
Info Travel helps with photos, form guidance and translations of Vietnamese supporting documents, then transfers your visa or residence card to the new passport or arranges the exit visa for ETD holders. We work only within what the Consulate General and HM Passport Office allow.
Consular legalisation, MOFA/DOFA certification and notarised translation
The UK is a party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession, so from 11 September 2026 documents between the two countries use an apostille instead of consular legalisation. More: apostille vs consular legalisation.
a) UK documents for use in Vietnam: apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office in the UK, then a notarised translation into Vietnamese. Fallback if a receiving office insists: certification in the UK and legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in London – unless an international treaty exempts the document.
b) Vietnamese documents for use in the UK: apostille from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs (in the city) or the Consular Department of MOFA, with an English translation. Affirmations issued by the British Consulate General may need consular certification at the Department of Foreign Affairs when submitted to Vietnamese authorities, depending on the receiving office.
Info Travel provides the whole service – translation, notarisation, filing and collection at the DOFA or Consular Department. Details: consular legalisation service; quotes on WhatsApp +84327828822.
