Main consular services of the Embassy of Vietnam in the USA
The exact list of procedures, forms and fees is published on the mission’s website.
For Vietnamese citizens living in the USA
- Issuing, renewing and replacing passports; travel documents after a passport is lost.
- Civil status: birth, marriage and death registration, recording events registered locally, marital status certificates.
- Nationality applications (confirmation, regaining or renouncing Vietnamese nationality).
- Consular certification and legalisation; notarial and attestation services.
- Citizen protection in case of accidents, lost documents, detention or emergencies.
For foreigners
The mission issues visas to Vietnam, but most tourists and short-term business visitors now apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry). Embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants who already hold an approval letter from the Vietnam Immigration Department.
Do US citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
According to the current exemption list, US citizens holding ordinary passports are not visa-exempt. The most common route is the e-visa: up to 90 days, government fee USD 25 (single entry) or USD 50 (multiple entry). If you need a visa in your passport, apply at the embassy or use an approval letter to collect the visa at the airport.
Holders of diplomatic or official passports should check with the embassy, as separate agreements may apply. See also our Vietnam visa guide for US citizens and the Vietnam visa exemption list.
Legalising documents from the USA for use in Vietnam
From 11 September 2026, documents issued in the USA for use in Vietnam can be certified with an apostille instead of consular legalisation (the USA is a party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession; Decree 293/2026/ND-CP). Typical documents:
- Degrees and transcripts – proof of qualifications for a work permit;
- Criminal record certificates issued in the USA – a required part of work permit files;
- Birth certificates, marriage certificates and single-status documents – for civil status matters and family residence cards.
As a rule, the document is apostilled by the competent authority in the USA; confirm with the receiving authority in Vietnam first. For cases outside the Convention, consular legalisation (certification in the USA, then legalisation at the Vietnamese mission there) remains available. For US documents, apostilles are issued by the state Secretary of State (state documents) or the US Department of State (federal documents). See our consular legalisation service and the Vietnam work permit rules 2026; documents still need a notarised Vietnamese translation.

FAQ
What are the opening hours of the Embassy of Vietnam in the USA?
According to the Ministry portal, the embassy in Washington opens Monday–Friday 10:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:00, with the consular section receiving applications 09:30–12:00 (Eastern Time). For the consulates-general, check each official website.
Do I need an appointment?
The embassy directs consular applications to its online consular portal and visa applications to its visa portal. Before going in person, call or check the website to see whether an appointment or a mail-in application is required.
Should I apply at the embassy or get an e-visa?
For tourism or short business trips the e-visa is usually easier: apply online, receive the result by email and enter through any designated international checkpoint. An embassy visa makes sense for diplomatic or official passports, or if you already hold an approval letter and want the visa in your passport before departure.
