Vietnam has no consulate-general in New Zealand, so all consular matters go through the embassy in Wellington. Opening hours and submission methods can change; check the official website or the missions list on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal before you go.
Main consular services
For Vietnamese citizens in New Zealand:
- New and replacement passports; travel documents if a passport is lost.
- Civil status: birth, marriage and death registration, and recording events registered in New Zealand.
- Citizenship matters: renunciation, restoration, confirmation of Vietnamese nationality.
- Certification, consular legalisation, notarisation and attestation of documents.
- Assistance to citizens in difficulty.
For foreigners: most travellers now apply for an e-visa online at the official site evisa.gov.vn and never need to visit the embassy. Visas stamped at the embassy are mostly for diplomatic or official passport holders, or for applicants who already hold an approval letter from Vietnam’s Immigration Department.
Do New Zealand citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. New Zealand is not on the Vietnam visa exemption list, so New Zealand citizens need a visa (apart from the separate visa-free stay of up to 30 days for direct arrivals on Phu Quoc island). The usual route is an e-visa: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, government fee USD 25 (single) or USD 50 (multiple). See our Vietnam e-visa application guide and the Vietnam visa by nationality hub.
Legalising New Zealand documents for use in Vietnam
Degrees, criminal record certificates (needed for work permits), birth certificates and marriage documents issued in New Zealand used to require authentication by the competent New Zealand authority followed by consular legalisation at the Vietnamese embassy in Wellington.
From 11 September 2026 the Apostille Convention applies to Vietnam (implemented by Decree 293/2026/ND-CP). According to the Hague Conference (HCCH) status table, New Zealand is a party and is not among the states that objected to Vietnam’s accession, so New Zealand public documents with an apostille should in principle no longer need consular legalisation. As the rule is new, confirm with the receiving authority in Vietnam. A certified Vietnamese translation is still required.
