Main consular services of the Embassy of Vietnam in Brunei

The exact list of procedures, forms and fees is published on the mission’s website.

For Vietnamese citizens living in Brunei

  • Issuing, renewing and replacing passports; travel documents after a passport is lost.
  • Civil status: birth, marriage and death registration, recording events registered locally, marital status certificates.
  • Nationality applications (confirmation, regaining or renouncing Vietnamese nationality).
  • Consular certification and legalisation; notarial and attestation services.
  • Citizen protection in case of accidents, lost documents, detention or emergencies.

For foreigners

The mission issues visas to Vietnam, but most tourists and short-term business visitors now apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry). Embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants who already hold an approval letter from the Vietnam Immigration Department.

Do Bruneian citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

Brunei is an ASEAN member: under a bilateral arrangement, Bruneian ordinary passport holders can visit Vietnam visa-free for up to 14 days. For longer stays, work or study, you need an e-visa (up to 90 days, government fee USD 25 single or USD 50 multiple entry) or a visa matching your purpose.

Holders of diplomatic or official passports should check with the embassy, as separate agreements may apply. See also our Vietnam visa guide by nationality and the Vietnam visa exemption list.

Legalising documents from Brunei for use in Vietnam

From 11 September 2026, documents issued in Brunei for use in Vietnam can be certified with an apostille instead of consular legalisation (Brunei is a party to the Apostille Convention and did not object to Vietnam’s accession; Decree 293/2026/ND-CP). Typical documents:

  • Degrees and transcripts – proof of qualifications for a work permit;
  • Criminal record certificates issued in Brunei – a required part of work permit files;
  • Birth certificates, marriage certificates and single-status documents – for civil status matters and family residence cards.

As a rule, the document is apostilled by the competent authority in Brunei; confirm with the receiving authority in Vietnam first. For cases outside the Convention, consular legalisation (certification in Brunei, then legalisation at the Vietnamese mission there) remains available. See our consular legalisation service and the Vietnam work permit rules 2026; documents still need a notarised Vietnamese translation.

FAQ

What are the opening hours of the Embassy of Vietnam in Brunei?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal does not list opening hours for this mission. Please check the official website or phone ahead, and note closures on both Vietnamese and local public holidays.

Do I need an appointment?

No general appointment rule is published by the Ministry. Email or call first to confirm the documents required and when applications are received.

Should I apply at the embassy or get an e-visa?

For tourism or short business trips the e-visa is usually easier: apply online, receive the result by email and enter through any designated international checkpoint. An embassy visa makes sense for diplomatic or official passports, or if you already hold an approval letter and want the visa in your passport before departure.
