Main consular services
For Vietnamese citizens
- New and replacement ordinary passports; travel documents for returning home after a passport is lost.
- Civil status: registration of births, marriages and deaths, and recording of events registered locally.
- Nationality procedures: confirmation, renunciation or restoration of Vietnamese nationality.
- Consular certification and legalisation; certified copies, signature attestation and powers of attorney.

For foreigners
- Visas: most travellers now apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn. Visas issued at the embassy are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for applicants holding an approved approval letter.
- Legalisation of documents issued in Portugal for use in Vietnam when the Apostille route is not used.
Do Portuguese citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
According to the Vietnam visa exemption list 2026, Portugal is currently not on the visa-exempt list. Portuguese citizens need a visa before arrival, most commonly an e-visa from evisa.gov.vn, valid for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry. The government fee is USD 25 (single) or USD 50 (multiple).
Legalising documents from Portugal for use in Vietnam
Vietnam has acceded to the 1961 Apostille Convention, which entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026. Portugal is a party to the Convention and, according to the HCCH status table, did not object to Vietnam’s accession. Public documents from Portugal can be apostilled in Portugal, then translated with a notarised Vietnamese translation in Vietnam. As practice is still new, check with the receiving authority first; if it does not accept apostilles yet, use consular legalisation through the Embassy of Vietnam in Portugal.
- Degrees and professional certificates: needed for a work permit.
- Criminal record certificates: a required part of a work permit file.
- Birth and marriage certificates: used for marriage registration, a child’s birth registration, or a family residence card.

FAQ
What are the opening hours of the Embassy of Vietnam in Portugal?
The MOFA portal does not publish opening hours for this embassy. Check the official website once available or call before visiting.
Do I need an appointment?
It is best to contact the embassy by phone or email first to confirm the documents required and reception times, especially for passports, civil status and legalisation.
Should I apply at the embassy or get an e-visa?
For ordinary tourism and business trips, the e-visa at evisa.gov.vn is the fastest option because you do not have to visit the embassy. An embassy visa suits diplomatic or official passports, or travellers who already hold an approved approval letter.
