Details from the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal, list of Vietnamese representative missions abroad (October 2026). The ministry portal does not publish opening hours; check the embassy’s official website or call before visiting. Full list of missions: mofa.gov.vn (Representative Missions).
According to the ministry list, Vietnam has no consulate-general in Austria; the embassy in Vienna is the main consular point of contact.
Main consular services
For Vietnamese citizens
- Passport issuance and renewal; travel documents if a passport is lost;
- Civil status registration: births, marriages, deaths, certificates of marital status;
- Nationality matters: renunciation, restoration, confirmation of Vietnamese nationality;
- Consular certification and legalisation; certified copies and signature attestation;
- Citizen protection in case of accidents, detention or lost documents.
For foreigners
- Vietnam visas: most travellers now apply for an e-visa online; embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or for holders of an approved entry approval letter;
- Legalisation of documents issued in Austria for use in Vietnam (where required).
Requirements, fees and processing times are published by the embassy; check its official website before applying.
Do Austrian citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Austrian citizens are currently not covered by Vietnam’s 45-day unilateral exemption or any bilateral exemption (see the Vietnam visa exemption list). The usual route is an e-visa applied for online on the official portal evisa.gov.vn: valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, with a government fee of USD 25 (single) or USD 50 (multiple). For help with the application, see our Vietnam e-visa service.
For business trips, employment or longer family visits, a visa based on an entry approval letter sponsored by a Vietnamese company or relative is common; the visa is then issued on arrival or stamped at the embassy.
Unlike German or Swiss citizens (45-day visa exemption), Austrian citizens are currently not on the exemption list, so a visa must be arranged before the trip.
Legalising documents from Austria for use in Vietnam
Foreign documents commonly used in Vietnam:
- Degrees and transcripts – for work permits or further study;
- Criminal record certificates – required for a work permit;
- Birth certificates, certificates of marital status, marriage certificates – for marriage, family visas and residence cards;
- Company documents and powers of attorney.
Vietnam joined the Apostille Convention (in force from 11 September 2026), but Austria objected to the accession, so the Convention does not apply between Austria and Vietnam. Austrian documents still follow the legalisation chain: certification by the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs (or an authorised body) → legalisation at the Vietnamese embassy in Vienna → notarised Vietnamese translation in Vietnam.
Info Travel handles consular legalisation and notarised translation on the Vietnamese side and advises on work permit applications.

FAQ
What are the embassy’s opening hours?
The ministry portal does not list opening hours. Check vnembassy-vienna.mofa.gov.vn or call +43 1 3680755 10 before visiting.
Do I need an appointment?
It is best to contact the embassy by phone or email first to confirm the documents and when they are accepted, especially for passports, civil status and legalisation.
Should I apply at the embassy or online?
For tourism or short business trips the e-visa is the easiest option: it is fully online and you do not need to visit the embassy. Embassy visas are mainly for diplomatic or official passports, or when an approval letter names the embassy as the pick-up point.
