Consular services for Korean citizens

Korea’s foreign-ministry site blocks automated reading, so we list only what we could confirm and recommend double-checking online:

  • Issuance and renewal of Korean passports – visitors report renewing passports at the SQ4 consular section.
  • Help after a lost passport, including emergency travel documents to return home.
  • Assistance for citizens in distress: accidents, arrest, death of a relative.
  • Family-registration, certification and notarial services for Korean nationals – see the official site for the current list.

Applications for Korean visas (Vietnamese citizens and foreign residents in the north) normally go through the Korea Visa Application Center (KVAC), 12th floor, Discovery Complex, 302 Cau Giay, rather than the embassy counter.

Before you go

  • The Diplomatic Compound is a fair way from the Old Quarter; allow travel time and arrive before the morning session opens.
  • Google Maps shows two pins (embassy and “consular section”), both within SQ4 – there is no separate Korean consulate in Hanoi.
  • Security at the gate is strict: queue as instructed and bring your passport or other ID.
  • Phone lines are hard to reach at busy times; call early in the day or prepare your questions in writing.
  • The waiting area gets crowded, especially in the afternoon collection window. Bring originals and copies of everything.
  • Closed on Vietnamese public holidays and some Korean holidays such as Seollal and Chuseok – check announcements.

Common situations foreigners face

Lost or stolen passport. Get a police report from the ward police where it happened, then apply for a new passport or emergency travel document at the consular section. Your Vietnamese visa was in the old passport, so you also need a new visa or an exit permit from the Immigration Department before flying – see our guide to exit procedures.

Passport about to expire. Many Koreans working in northern industrial zones hold work visas or a temporary residence card. These do not move automatically to a new passport: you must transfer the visa or have the card reissued under the new passport number, possibly together with a visa extension.

Documents for marriage, births or work permits. Marriage to a Vietnamese citizen usually requires a family-relation certificate/marital-status proof; a work permit needs criminal records and degrees. These need an apostille (or legalisation) and a notarised Vietnamese translation.

Signatures and powers of attorney. To authorise relatives in Korea to handle property or banking, citizens often need a consular-certified power of attorney – check which formats are accepted.

Overseas voting. Korean citizens abroad register in advance to vote in presidential and National Assembly elections; notices appear on the embassy website.

Korean passport help in Vietnam

The SQ4 consular section accepts passport applications from Korean citizens in the north. Applicants normally attend in person for photo, fingerprints and signature. Info Travel cannot replace that visit, but we can:

  • check your document list, help with forms and compliant photos;
  • translate and notarise Vietnamese documents you must attach (for example a child’s Vietnamese birth certificate);
  • explain the route and submission/collection times so you avoid repeat trips;
  • afterwards transfer your visa, reissue your TRC or obtain an exit visa if needed.

We assist only within what the embassy allows; the decision to issue a passport rests with the Korean authorities.

Apostille, consular legalisation and notarised translation

Korea has been party to the Apostille Convention since 2007. Vietnam acceded and the Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026; Korea did not object. Therefore:

a) Korean documents for use in Vietnam: obtain an apostille from the competent Korean authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Justice depending on the document), then a notarised translation into Vietnamese. The traditional route – certification in Korea and legalisation at the Vietnamese Embassy in Seoul – remains a fallback where an authority requests it, unless a treaty provides an exemption. See apostille vs consular legalisation.

b) Vietnamese documents for use in Korea: the Consular Department (MOFA, Hanoi) or the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs issues the apostille; add a Korean translation where required. Where an apostille does not apply, consular certification in Vietnam followed by legalisation at the Korean Embassy is the fallback.

Info Travel handles the whole chain – translation, notarisation, apostille or consular certification at the Consular Department and collection. See our consular legalisation service. Prices are quoted on WhatsApp.

FAQ

Where is the Korean Embassy in Hanoi?

At Lot SQ4 in the Diplomatic Compound, Xuan Dinh Ward (formerly Bac Tu Liem District). The consular section is on the same site, no longer at Charmvit Tower.

Do I apply for a Korean visa at the embassy?

Most visa applications are lodged at KVAC, 302 Cau Giay; the embassy decides them. Foreigners should make sure their own Vietnamese residence status is valid first.

I renewed my Korean passport – what about my Vietnamese visa?

It must be transferred, or your TRC reissued, under the new passport at the immigration office. Info Travel can do this for you.

Do Korean documents still need legalisation?

Since 11 September 2026 an apostille from Korea plus a notarised Vietnamese translation is normally enough.
