Consular services for German citizens

The Consulate General is the point of contact for the German community in southern and south-central Vietnam. Its published services include:

  • Applications for German passports, passport substitutes and ID cards, and eID cards for EU/EEA nationals. Applying needs an appointment. Collection does not (Mon, Tue and Thu 08:30–09:30).
  • Legalisation of Vietnamese civil status documents, and certification of signatures and copies, handled at the walk-in counter.
  • Help after losing a passport. If you urgently need a replacement, call or use the contact form rather than waiting for an online slot.
  • Information on marriage, births of German children, pensions and Germans in distress.

What to know before you go

  • For passport and ID applications, book through the Consulate General’s online appointment system. For legalisations and certifications, come during walk-in hours. Thursday afternoons are possible with a booking.
  • Documents are ready no earlier than the next working day, for collection between 09:30 and 11:30.
  • When it is busy, visitors may not wait inside the building, so arrive early with complete paperwork.
  • Bring your original passport. Ignore anyone selling “fast appointments”, because the official system is free.
  • The Consulate General closes on Vietnamese public holidays and some German holidays.
  • The main waiting area is outdoors and gets hot later in the day. If you can, choose an early-morning appointment and bring water.
  • Even with an appointment, allow for some waiting. Consular officers speak German and English; security and front-desk staff are Vietnamese.

Common situations that bring foreigners to the consulate

Passport lost in HCMC, Nha Trang, Da Lat or Phu Quoc: report it to the local police and contact the Consulate General for a replacement document. Then apply for a new visa or exit permit, because your visa was in the lost passport. Info Travel handles the exit procedures.

New passport: the old one is cancelled when you collect the new one. Keep both to transfer your visa or temporary residence card at immigration.

Marriage, birth or work documents: Germans marrying a Vietnamese partner in the south, or completing a work permit file, usually need German documents that are legalised and translated into Vietnamese with notarisation.

Signature and life certificates: German retirees in Vung Tau or Da Nang can have documents certified during walk-in hours.

If your permitted stay is running out while you wait, consider a visa extension.

Help with a German passport in Vietnam

The Consulate General accepts passport applications by appointment. Applicants must attend for fingerprints, which apply to adults and to children aged six and over. Minors come with a guardian.

Info Travel helps within what the German mission permits: booking guidance, document checklists, photos, and translations of Vietnamese birth or marriage certificates. Once the new passport arrives, we transfer your visa or TRC and complete any immigration steps. You still submit the application and give biometrics yourself.

Consular legalisation, certification and certified translation

German documents for use in Vietnam: the documents are authenticated by the competent German authority and legalised by a Vietnamese mission in Germany, then translated into Vietnamese and notarised. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Vietnam on 11 September 2026, but Germany objected to Vietnam’s accession, so the apostille does not apply between the two countries and full consular legalisation is still required. These steps apply unless an international treaty grants an exemption. See apostille vs consular legalisation.

Vietnamese documents for use in Germany: first get consular certification from the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs or the Consular Department in Hanoi. Then submit the document for legalisation at the Consulate General with a German translation. Only listed document types are accepted, mainly civil status records, police certificates and divorce judgments. The fee is EUR 30 per stamp, payable in VND.

Info Travel offers the full package: notarised translation, the Vietnamese foreign affairs stamp, and submission and collection at the Consulate General. See our consular legalisation service. Ask for a quote on WhatsApp.
